I plan on using it until they no longer ride in the cart. Those things are nastier than a public toilet, so I don't care how old a kid is-if they're in a cart, it's covered!
I used it until the kid could sit up and I knew for certain he or she would NOT put things (like the handle or metal side) in his/her mouth. Our grocery store has a free childcare that they go in now, but on the occasions we go to another grocery store or they don't go in the child care, we use the sanitizer wipes. Actually use those even if the kids aren't with me!
My DS is 2.5 and I still use one. I know he looks like like a big baby using it but I just feel it is cleaner. He never touches the cart and I wash the cover frequently. He eats a lot while we shop and I just feel better about it.
I never used one. After the time when he was about 3 months old in the Bjorn on the subway with me, and he somehow managed to start LICKING THE SUBWAY POLE while I was talking to someone, I figured he should be immune to all disgusting public area germs, lol.

This is awesome. Gross, but awesome. It reminds of me DS's daycare, which insists that we wash his naptime sheets every single day. They're convinced it stops the spread of germs, even though I personally saw one kid licking the wall in the timeout spot. Yeah, if that can't be stopped, pretty sure that washing sheets every day is just wasting water.
