I was just told on Friday I have GD....my appointement is on Wed and it will go into details about the everything. My first preg was fine and i am doin the same thing with this one...weird how i got it this time.
What can I expect at my appointment? How does this affect the baby (besides bigger baby)? I hope everything will be okay. Did you girls get upset too when you hear the news?
Re: so upset
Honestly, I was borderline hysterical. It strikes me as really funny now because I would rather have the GD diagnosis over these horrible hemorrhoids! But I have to admit, it has been very easy for me to control-- my docs said my numbers actually came back "boringly" normal except for 2 scores (the 2 and 3 hour) that were just a couple of points out of range.
I have had a really positive experience-- I eat slightly better which can only benefit my baby (even though I considered myself healthy beforehand), my baby is in the 50-60th percentile and I even am getting to go past my due date without an induction until 41 weeks!
GL! I think you will find that you initial reaction could be the worst of it!
Ditto. Try not to worry too much, though. It is very manageable and there are even steps (like diet and exercise) between GD and needing medication.
Are you going to your regular provider for your next appt. or do you have an appointment with a nutritionist? You'll probably take something along the lines of a class to learn about servings of carbs, what's okay, what's not, etc. Pp is right: you will likely be eating even better which can only help the baby.
As far as side effects, yes, there can be an issue with the baby being too large, but they will do growth scans to make sure that doesn't get out of control. Also, some babies suffer from hypoglycemia after birth because their pancreas may have been overactive in an attempt to control the sugar getting pumped in from mom's body.
Try not to worry, though, because all of this is treatable and each day you limit your carbs and stay away from simple sugars is one more step toward keeping baby healthy. Also, my growth u/s showed my LO's size to be completely normal as well, and I was diagnosed at about the same time as you (30 wks). From what I understand, most of the awful health risks are limited to women who don't follow the diet or who aren't diagnosed at all (you might hear about some countries where babies are born at 15lbs, etc. that's partly due to poor healthcare and diagnosis of GD).
This board has been REALLY helpful to me, so I hope you find some encouragement here. Try not to worry too much, you'll do great! GL.
I passed my tests and did not have GD. However, when my son was born, he was a GD baby - the doctors were shocked to hear I didn't have GD. I was devastated to have done that to my son. Clearly, even though I passed the test, I had some GD.
My son spent 4 days in the NICU unit getting his glucose levels under control. His body couldn't regulate his blood sugar so they would prick his heel 4 times a day to test his levels. Each time, he would cry and try to move his heel away. It was heartbreaking to watch. However, the nurses repeatedly told me not to worry because he would be fine. Any GD baby just needs time to get their bodies to kick in and start working and he wouldn't (and doesn't) have any lasting effects from it.
Oh yeah- did I mention he was 9lbs, 3oz and a month early? He would have been over 10 pounds if I went to full term (I had pre-e unrelated to all this).
This time around I will be eating like I have GD throughout my pregnancy (after teh m/s is gone- now I just want to keep whatever I can down).
