how long for a child suppository to work?

Dd went to the er today with her strep, ear infection and coughing. She was seen on Thursday for the strep and has gotten worse so I took her to the ER at the on-call's recommendation They did blood work, xrays of chest and stomach and a culture.  The stomach xray showed her constipated (they think med related).  She really hasn't eaten much since Thursday.  Her urine showed something so we have to re-test on Monday with pedi but they think it was elevated due to not eating enough calories.  Everything else was ok.  So I gave her the suppository (along with her new meds for the ear infection) at 6.  She is sleeping right now but the suppository hasn't worked yet and it is almost 2 hours.

This.  We used MANY of the Baby-Lax glycerine suppositories for our older DD when she was about 3 or 4...they always worked within 10 minutes TOPS.  GL!

This is what    I used  but she hasn't eaten so I'm not sure if that might delay it.

  • I only have experience with the glycerin ones as well, and it was about 15-20 min, but I had to um, make sure it stayed in during that time...

  • Within 10 minutes, but as a previous poster said I had to make sure it stayed in.  My son was a newborn when we had to do them and we were first time parents terrified of sticking something up his butt :)  So the first few times we put it up there it just fell out in his diaper.  Are you sure it didn't fall out in your daughters diaper?  Or if she doesn't wear diapers in her underwear, on the floor etc?

darn  i will have to check.  She is sleeping and really never complained of belly pain.  Ugh, I hate to wake her up if I have to do it again.  I think she really needs the sleep.  Her fever finally went down with the motrin.  Thanks everyone for the advice and thoughts.  When we left the ER and they handed us the paperwork, the nurse gave us papers on EI, Constipation, Strep and then the stomach virus and told dd, that she got knocked with it all.  DD was so good during the long er visit too.  I hope she looks better tomorrow.  Thanks again.
