Making challah!

I got up early this morning and decided to make challah on a whim.

It's currently sitting on a radiator in my bathroom (warm spot where the dog can't get it) and I have about 30 minutes before I punch it down for its second rise.

Can't wait for challah french toast for breakfast tomorrow!

  • ooh I love making challah! Especially french toast the next day.
  • yummy! what recipe do you use? I love challah. Right now I'm making some good ol' fashioned white bread, and it's rising on top of the dryer :)

I use Ruth Reichl's recipe from Gourmet's big yellow cookbook.

That's it! (for the most part)

Braid it, tuck the ends under and stick both loaves on a greased cookie sheet to rest for another 30 minutes. Then brush them with the egg white/water mixture and bake for 40 minutes at 375 degrees. Keep an eye on it though. It only takes ~30 minutes in my oven.
