Tried to swaddle DS with arms out... EPIC FAIL

He just kept waking up... I gave up and swaddled his arms at 11:00pm.  DD has no problem with it, I think DS may be swaddled until kindergarten.

  • IMO it's not "swaddling" unless the arms are in- since the whole reason you swaddle is to keep the arms contrained - like in the womb... We swaddled the arms (and had the LEGS out) until 5.5 months. They loved it- and we loved them sleeping well :)

  • what swaddle did you guys use for bigger babies?

They are outgrowing the miracle blankets (I already swaddle them with their legs out)...but they're breaking free!

We used Swaddle Me blankets, the larges. Once they started breaking free, we quit swaddling, we let them go a couple of nights of breaking free and once they quit waking up, we moved to sleep sacks.

  • we used the miracle blankets with the legs out - until 5.5mo... and Gibby is HUGE (he was 22lbs at his 6mo appt).

there's a way to tuck the arm flaps that makes it harder for them to get out- play around with it- i can't explain it- just something i figured out after trying a few ways... since they had learned to arch their backs and pull their arms at the same time- you need to tuck the flaps in where their backs would still be touching the mattress when they arch it- if that makes sense :)

  • We swaddled our boys till they were 6 months! They just didn't sleep well unswaddled before then. Once they started breaking out of the Miracle Blankets (3.5 months) we would swaddle them in an MB with arms out and a Large-size SwaddleMe blanket over that. They only broke out of the double swaddle a few times. ;) Then of course we just made sure to control the room temp so they wouldn't overheat.

When we did wean them from swaddling, we swaddled with one arm out and then both arms out for a while, then sleep sacks.
