High-Risk Pregnancy

For GD how is your carb allowance determinded?

I have a gestational diabetes nutrition counseling class to attend next Friday.  I have a friend who had GD with her first pregnancy and this are the guidelines she gave me for carbs:

15 carbs for breakfast, 15 for morning snack, 30 for lunch, 15 for afternoon snack, 30 for dinner and 15 more for bedtime snack.

I want to make some changes before next week but then I see other posts from people with much different allowances.  I've tried looking online and haven't found what I'm looking for.

Am I ok to just start with my friend's suggestions?

  • I would start with what your friend's suggestion, and go from there. Mine is different I think because I am having twins.

  • Starting with your friend's suggestions looks like a good safe bet.

I've learned that I can get away with 30 grams of carbs for breakfast and 30 for bedtime snack, my body doesn't handle the sugar in milk so well, so I have to be careful, I REALLY need to drink lots of water to get lunch and dinner where they need to be, etc.

You'll be able to find this stuff out when you can test your blood sugar level, then you and your dietitian can fine tune your diet to what works best for you.  In the meantime, those are good guidelines to follow.

  • Mine did it based on severity of the GD and height. I am 5'8 so I got 15 for breakfast 15 snack, 30 lunch, 15 snack, 45-60 dinner, and 15-30 for night snack.

It looks like dinner is a bit low. Breakfast is the hardest for me to figure out what to eat for but I just break it up b/c I wasn't having a morning snack before so I added that and it helped.

It also depends on your numbers too I think. If you need help with it let me know. For example 6 kisses are 15 grams so if I feel like I need some chocolate I eat a few with some almonds as my afternoon snack and that helps me not feel super constricted.

  • I was allowed 15 for breakfast, 45 for lunch, 60 for dinner, and 15 for each of 3 daily snacks. Once you start testing your bloodsugar you'll be able to refine those a bit, though. You'll learn what your body can tolerate at different times of the day.
  • I am not sure how it's determined, perhaps the jump-off place is based upon body mass index or something.

My numbers are twice the ones you've listed:

30 g/carb for breakfast and three snacks

45 g/cab for lunch and dinner

Start with the ones your friend has laid out for you and if you feel like you have low blood sugar maybe add in more?
