NPR ~ If you have moved/sold a house

have you looked at Megan's law when considering buying a house? We have our house on the market, a family (w/ 2 small children) looked at the house and were going to make an offer, until they looked a Megan's law and saw there are sex offenders in the area. Honestly when we bought our house we didn't even think of looking at megan's law, DD was 6 months old when we bought it. Just curious!

  • Nope.  I live in the heart of NYC, so I would not check into registered offenders since I know without a doubt there would be many.  Besides, I'm much more concerned with those offenders who either haven't been caught yet or aren't complying with Megan's Law than those who are compliant.  Once we move somewhere that the kids will be out of my site (we won't be in the city when they're older) I will check so I know to watch out, but the existence of offenders in and of itself would not be cause not to buy the otherwise perfect house.  Besides, like all other neighbor questions, buying or not because of neighbors never makes sense since you never know who will move in/out over time.  You could buy elsewhere and have a Megan's Law registered offender move next door in a few years anyway.

  • No, who's to say that after you move in your next door neighbor moves & in moves a sex offender?  You cannot control where they live but you need to be informed & as your kids get older keep them informed of who & where these people live.
