High-Risk Pregnancy

What medications are you using for Postpartum Pre-E???

Hi Ladies,

I wanted to check in with you Pre- E ladies. Can you let me know what medications for blood pressure management you are on? I know alot of us are on Labetalol but my docs have been trying to titrate me off and put me on something with less side effects.

Can you let me know what you are taking? Side effects? How well it manages your pressures? What are your pressures now being postpartum??

Any thoughts would be helpful and appreciated. Thank you!!!

  • I was on something for about 3 months after I had my son.  I think it was Labetaol- is that the water pill?  I know I took it daily but I didn't have any side effects except peeing a lot.

I hope they find something that works for you!

3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.

  • I responded to your previous post about labetalol and norvasq, but I was quite late with a reply so you probably missed it.   Here is what I responded, with a few edits:

I'm quite late w a reply.  I was on labetalol during labor and norvasq for a bit immediately pp.  I'm back on norvasq now w/ an additional beta blocker as well (metoprolol tartrate).  You should be aware that norvasq can cause some impressive edema (swelling).  I tolerate a low dose, but the higher dose swelled me up like a freaking balloon, which was scary because I was still technically considered at-risk for pree and eclampsia.  They took me off of it to see if the swelling went away and my blood pressure was ok (not great, but pre-hypertensive) until 9 months postpartum (this is due to chronic kidney disease rather than pregnancy/pree).

We also had a host of breastfeeding issues, including hypertonia in my son - apparently norvasq causes hypertonia in some people who take it, so it *might* have contributed to that - but I also think it could have been magnesium, which caused horrible muscle spasms for me as I was weaned from it.

Hope some of that is helpful!

  • Procardia XL.  It works well, but it does cause horrible headaches for the first few days taking it.  Once I survived the first 3-4 days, I haven't had any side effects.  I've been able to stay on this for the new pregnancy.

I've also been on lisinopril (cough problem), metaprolol (triggers depression), and hydrochlorothiazide (OK, but I'm a teacher and it makes you pee a lot.  I sometime have to go 6-8 hours without getting to the bathroom).

  • I take Procardia, too, but I haven't had any side effects. It has worked well for me and my OB is cutting be down to half a pill a day now. I'm 3 weeks postpartum and my pressures are back to normal.
