If you've ever tutored or hired a tutor, question for you...

Hi all

I am trying to start a tutoring "business" and need some advice.  If you tutor (or you have/had hired a tutor) how "formal" was it  in terms of assessing, keeping data etc.  Of course I plan on keeping good data so I can show the parent whether or not the child is making progress, but my SIL tutored and did all sort of testing and data.  she also had the parent sign a contract, charged a travel fee (I don;t plan on doing this), etc.  Was your experience this professional or more laid back??  Did you provide (or receive) formal help in a specific skill, or was it more like "please help my kid with his homework" type thing??  I realize I will need to tailor the work to the child's needs but I was curious what the norm was.  TIA LOTS!

  • I am super laid back.  I tutor mostly kids who attend the elem. school where I taught, so I am in email contact with their teachers and the parents to monitor needs and progress.  I don't do much formal assessing, other than to move from one guided reading level to the next or whatever.  No contracts - some parents pay me weekly and others pay me a month at a time.  I get $1 a minute.

  • I am not currently tutoring but in the past I have tutored elementary and middle school students.  I've been a teacher for over 18 years and I usually keep a binder with assessments, work samples, recordings of reading and I do keep track of the standards that they have mastered or are approaching.  I keep track of this for all my students at school so I basically use the same method when I tutor.  I charge 60 dollars an hour.  I do have them sign a commitment agreement for the fee for service.  I do not charge for travel but if they cancel more than 2x, I do charge for that service day (if they give me less than 12 hours notice).  I also do not charge for a certain number of sessions, if I tutor I get paid.  I tutor special education students and students who have significant delays.
