Just rec'd the call - I have GD

I've been lurking on here for a couple of days in anticipation of receiving this news.

I am scheduled for a class next Friday.  I'm sure a lot of you have been through this so can you give me some insight?  The nurse didn't say anything about medication so it sounds like we are going to try and control it with diet.

What kinds of changes do I need to make between now and next Friday?  I know I should've asked the nurse but my mind went blank!

Thanks so much!

Re: Just rec'd the call - I have GD

  • I'm sorry to hear you have GD.  I too kind of had a feeling I'd be getting the bad news before I even got the call.

I'm a newbie here, only been on the diet for a couple of weeks, but my GD has been pretty well-controlled by diet, and I'm on bed rest and can't exercise!  So I hope it goes as well for you!

It's important to follow what your dietitian says, but to prepare and get in the mode, what I did was cut out sweets and sodas, and read labels carefully to make sure I was getting about 3 servings of carbs per meal, and about 1 serving per snack (1 serving = 15 grams).  That's actually pretty close to what I'm still doing, but it seems as though different providers have different guidelines, so who knows what your class on Friday will reveal.  Every time you take care to make a meal healthy is one more meal that is good for LO, so even little changes this week can't hurt!

  • You need to stay away from high carb foods.

My diet (from my nurtritionist) was

     Breakfast 30 carbs

    Snack 15-25 carbs

    Lunch 45 carbs

    Snack 15-30 carbs

    Dinner 45 carbs

Read labels.  1/8th of a box of pasta has 41 carbs in it.  That would be too little food, and too high in carbs to even have sauce with it.

We stopped eating all pasta, bread and pizza.

We eat a lot more meat and chicken and broccoli.

Eat more eggs, cheese and meat.

Stay away from fruit (apples have high sugar content) know your veggie carb content (Broccoli good.. corn, white pototes, bad)

You want to read the GRAMS of carbs on the back of a label.

You'll end up with a lot of eye opening information.  I couldn't have any BBQ sauce with my whole wheat chicken nuggets (15 G per TABLESPOON).  Also, I do a lot of salads with cut up chicken, and oil and balsamic vinegar.

    HTH.
