Breastfeeding

When did you have your first drink (if at all)?

How long did you wait after your LO was born to have a glass of wine or a beer?  I feel like I need to wait until DS is feeding at more consistent times, or at least when he's not cluster feeding in the evenings.  But it is awfully tempting to have a glass of wine with dinner after I've waited all these months!

If you do have the occasional drink, how do you time it with feedings?  With my first, the pedi said to have a beer WHILE nursing, because by the time it hit my BM, DD would be off the breast, and it would have maximal time to leave my system before the next feeding.  So we have a pic of me enjoying a Corona while BFing -- Mother of the Year material, lol!

    love it!!

I took sips off of DH's beer or had small glasses of wine a few weeks PP.  My first true drink came somewhere around 8 weeks when Drew started sleeping longer at night and dropped a night feeding.  At that point I knew that when we put him down at 9pm he wasn't going to nurse until at least 3am.

If I do have a drink or two, I always do it after we put Drew down for the night.  It usually works well, I do miss drinking beer while watching football though!

  • I had some wine while in the hospital.  DH brought some up for us to celebrate after DD nursed and went to the nursery for the night.

I EP now and drink occasionally.  Since I only pump 4 times a day, I just wait and have a couple of drinks after I pump.  It will be out of my system before I need to pump again so I don't worry too much about it.  It I have more than 1 or 2, I may dump if I deem necessary.

  • I think I was 3 or 4w pp. The rule I follow is that if it is safe to drive then it is safe to nurse.
  • I had some Japanese wine 2 days PP. Iv had a few drinks since then, I also am drinking while B/F but I usually only take a few sips before Im done, even when I want more I'm a bit paranoid to drink it all.
  • I think it was 2 weeks pp. DH went out and bought me a six pack. I also follow the rule if I can drive I can bf.

  • We had a champagne dinner at the hospital, the LC encouraged me to have a glass of champagne. I watered it down with cranberry juice though, not a big champagne drinker.

  • As soon as I came home! DH bought me margarita mix a few days before she was born so that it would be ready lol. I have one glass of wine or a small drink at night, right after she eats. If she wants to eat again before I feel she should (an hour or so) we give her a bottle of BM instead.
