High-Risk Pregnancy

Question about induction and GD...

If you have GD, do you automatically have to have an induction? Can you not wait to see if the baby comes on it's own? I understand if the baby starts to weight more than it should but what if the weight seems normal?

Thanks! You ladies are so awesome about answering my questions!

Re: Question about induction and GD...

  • having GD does not automatically mean you'll be induced. From what my Dr. has said, they're just going to monitor me a little more closely than if I didn't have GD. The only thing I've heard is that some don't like for GD moms to go past their due date, but I haven't had this discussion with my Dr. yet.

  • I am being induced at 39 weeks because I am on NPH insulin at night (for my fasting numbers).  If I was not on insulin they would let me go longer, but they still would not want me to go over my EDD.  With GD they have to be concerned with premature placental aging, not just baby's size.
  • I am going to be induced because the baby's weight has been staying higher then in the 50%. (I am also on insulin for my fasting #) So, I will NOT be going past my due date. I will be induced in the 39th week.

It is not the same for everyone. From what I understand from my Doctor, that if the baby were to in the 50%-tile or less, they would let the pregnancy run it's course.

  • Just on it being different for everyone - my perinatologist is not going to let me go past 37 based on her size.  I am measuring 5 weeks ahead, and her growth scans are showing 4 weeks - so dependant on lung maturity, we will be induced between 36-37, so it really depends on the size of the baby and all the other factors.
  • I am 40 weeks today and the earliest my OB let me schedule an induction was 41 weeks, so I do think its possible to go past term!  I am hoping that my baby will come naturally and of his/her own accord but if not, I have an end date in sight!  (Next Thursday!)

  • I wouldn't say automatically, but it's probably more likely.  My doc said she'd definitely not let me past 40 weeks.  This week, at 37 weeks, the baby is measuring 7 lbs. 8 oz. so I am now scheduled for an induction next Wedneday (38 w. 4 d).  Last week at 36 weeks LO measured 6 lbs. 3 oz. and the week before that she was 6 lbs.  So my doc wants to be sure to induce so I still have a good chance of a vaginal delivery vs. waiting and then having to do c-section.  I am also on insulin and she said that she generally induces insulin-dependent women between week 38-39 to avoid premature placental aging.
