I definitely do not sleep on the shams, and just based on how much I don't appreciate when T even puts his head on one (like, during a nap or to rest before bedtime or to prop up his head reading a book, etc), I'm guessing I won't be a real big fan of my kids sleeping on shams either.
For me, I wash the shams only when the duvet gets washed (once a month or maybe even every 2 months?). I wash pillow cases when the sheets get washed (weekly or bi-weekly)...just the thought of a greasy head on the sham makes me feel "behind" (as if it needs to now be washed NOW). I also have this strange feeling like the shams will get "worn out" before the duvet if they're slept on and then they won't match...
I'm not saying this is the most reasonable or sane answer tho... lol
I'm lazy - we sleep on ours. DH is even lazier and there is no way I could get him to take off a sham let alone put it back on in the morning. If they were expensive or a special material perhaps I'd get extra pillows and just take the pillows off the bed at night, but they're not. They're just white cotton shams and I wash them weekly when I wash the sheets and duvet cover. M doesn't even use a pillow.
I put mine behind my pillow and lean on it when I sit up in bed to read, then it goes on the floor beside my bed. I never heard of anyone sleeping on shams! Learn something new everyday I guess... but then again, I'm a flat pillow kind of girl.
Both Mason and I are mulitple pillow sleepers. the shammed one is always upagainst/leaning on the headboard, and then the pillow for the head is just sheeted.
We sleep on ours. Nothing in our house is just for decoration! Besides, having a pillow on your bed that you're not supposed to actually use just seems odd to me. If we get shams for K's bed eventually, she'll sleep on 'em too.

The pillows that have shams stay on our bed at night but they go behind our regular pillows so that our heads are not on the sham. I don't want the oils from our scalps transferring to the shams.
Re: Pillow sham question...clicky poll

We do this too.
