Is it bad to re-use the nipples from the nicu?

I have been re-using the enfamil slow-flow nipples from the nicu and was wondering if anyone else has as well, if so, for how long? It says on the package that they are disposable,  I hope I'm not harming anything by re-using them.

tia!

  • yeah, we did. If they start to split or crack or crumble, pitch 'em.

  • are these the green screw on types?

I might have some leftover. I'll have to go dig through our stuff. If you want 'em, I can mail them to you, but let me make sure we have some. We might only have the blue ones.

Yeah, they are the green ones. I have a bunch of them that should last me at least until we switch to regular flow nipples. I plan on switching to within the month. Thanks for the offer, I really appreciate it! If they don't take the regular flow ones, I'll page you!

  • Okay.. just let me know! Like I said, I'm not sure I have green ones left. I know we had some blue ones leftover, but there might be some green ones, too.

  • I've been using those since ds was in the nicu, but we tried a ton of different nipples, and these were the only ones he would take.  Now I just go online to Enfamil.com and reorder new ones, but I do just wash them and use them until they appear crumbly or stretched.   Since he needs a faster flow now, I just enlarge the hole on the standard flow nipples with a needle.  I used to be concerned about it, but I'll just pick my battles since he eats so well with them.

  • We used them too.  We continued to use the disposable bottles for months after to give Keira her medicine.

    These?

We not only kept using them, I found them online.  I ordered them and they came pretty quick.  They also have a 25 pack from the same seller.

Yes those! Thanks for the link.... I may have to buy the faster flow ones if the don"t like the evenflo or playtex ones I have.

  • We reused ours and DS is still alive!  I just made sure I washed them with hot water and boilded them weekly.
  • We reused them, too.
  • We did, until they started turning "crappy". I answered your questions on the MoMs board, too, and said that Even-flow nipples are VERY similar to the ones given in my NICU (dont know about yours), but its worth giving it a try when you do have to throw those ones away. I found that they were the same size, firmness, and flow. The girls did really well with them.
  • We reused them.

No problem!  We use the Medela nipple/bottles too and LO really likes those.  I got some of their bottles on clearance a while back and just tried using them.  She will use evenflo but she tends to drool more with those for some reason.

  • We have tons of both the green and blue nipples.  If you would like them pm me and I will mail them to you or anyone else who wants them,

  • I did until DD started eating more the those little bottles could handle. Plus I would check them for cracks, etc, then pitched them.

  • My mom was able to get ahold of two dozen of the NICU nipples from a friend that works in our local hospital's NIC. My mom said that multiple nurses instructed her to tell me to definitely not throw them out and waste them.  They said just to wash them with warm soapy water (not to sterilize them as this will wear them out) and toss once they begin to stretch or crack or flow too quickly.  Hope this helps!
  • Thanks everyone! I will re use them until they look crappy. I will also try the evenflo nipples and hope they like them.
