Anyone use store brand formula?

So my boy's are eating around 6-7ounces at a feed now.  We have been using Similac Advance and are going through cans rather quickly.  We do belong to a wholesale club so we do buy the larger cans for a good price.  My question is does anyone use Target, Costco, or Bj's brand formula?  I would like some feedback about them.  Did you always use or did you transition?  Thanks!

Re: Anyone use store brand formula?

  • I've been using the Costco brand formula since my LOs were about 7 weeks old. I started off using the Nestle Good Start, but only because a girl I met in the hospital worked for Nestle and got me a bunch of cases for free. But it was way too expensive to keep up with so we switched to Costco. The babies did just fine during the transition and are doing great on it now. I would definitely recommend it, it's good quality and much more affordable. Good luck! :)
  • We've been using the Sam's Club brand for months. It's 3lbs of formula for less than $19.  The NICU nurses told us that as soon as our free samples of formula ran out, we should switch to generic because it's the same as the Enfamil Premium Lipil that we were using for a fraction of the cost.  I'm sorry I don't have any experience with the brands you were referring to, but I'm sure the Costco is comparable to the Sam's Club brand I am using.

  • My girls were also on Similac Advanced and we bought at Sam's because they had the largest containers, but as you said it is not cheap. So at 3 months old we switched them the Sam's Brand Member Mark formula, it is a store brand of Enfamil Lipil. Since all formula is so closely mandated by the FDA/USDA it is all pretty much the same except each brand puts in different extra vitamins like DHA and things.

My girls did great on the Sam's brand and actually I found it to be less foamy than Similac or Enfamil. I believe Costco sells the store brand for Similac. I am not sure about BJ's. And Target also sells a store brand version of Similac but the containers are not as big as at the whole sale clubs and when you have twins you want the largest containers you can get or you are always at the store.

The Sam's brand was a 51 oz. container of formula and sells for $ 19.98 where I live (which is DC metro area). We would buy about 2 cans for a 2 week period, each can lasting 8 days a piece. That was when the girls were taking in their largest amount of formula which was 32 oz. of formula a day for each girl. Then after we started on solids they dropped to like 24 oz. of formula a day each girl.

We used the Kirkland/Costco brand and switched when they were around 4-5 months old from Similac Advance since we heard it was the same thing.  The Costco might be a little more foamy, but we'd mix a big batch at a time or add a few gas drops sometimes for individual bottles and it was fine and saved us a TON of money.

  • We used the Costco brand and it was great for our twins.

  • We used Costo brand for awhile and it worked great, but for whatever reason one of my daughters spits up less with Target brand so we use that now and love it!

  • We used Similac Advance from day 1 at the hospital and continued to use it until all the free cans we had been given were used up (from the hospital, my pediatrician and from baby showers). Then our pedi told us to use the Target brand equivalent because it was the same thing and a lot less expensive.  The boys have done GREAT on it and I think it is even gentler on their stomachs than the name brand.

I just stocked up today and Target now sells a 2 can value pack of the large cans for just under $20! That is less than $10 a can for what is double the size of the $20something can of Similac. CRAZY savings.

  • I still EP but every now and again I supplement one bottle a day. I bought the generic at both Target and Costco and both girls do great on either one. The only brand name formula they have been exposed to are Similac Adv. or Sensitive or Enfamil Gentle Ease. The generic is just as good!

  • We have used Target and Walmart brands with success. We started out using Similac Neosure I think and when we ran out of our samples we bought store brands. The only store brands we tried that my girls wouldn't tolerate was Sams Club so even if you try one generic and it doesn't work don't be afraid to try others.
