I nursed my DS, but he was a long nurser (20- 30 minutes on each side - even when he was older) and nursed every 3 hours right from the start, my DD however only nurses on one side (is this normal????) and is done in like 10 minutes (again, is this normal??) she purses her lips and refuses to latch on!
I switch sides each time we nurse (left, the right, then left, etc) but I am still stressing that I may get mastitis b/c I have such an oversupply (had it with my son too!) I had a really bad bout of mastitis that I was almost hospitalized for with my DS, I probably should have been but my mom (an RN) was here to take care of me, but it still took me two weeks to recover and then another several months to get back to my old self energy wise, I guess I am just remembering the stress of being so sick and don't want to be again, but what can I do?
Re: Normal??
Pumping would help the over supply but that will also continue the over supply. Your body might just need time to adjust to how much she is actually taking in.
My DD is a L-R one at a time 10 minute kind of girl too. My problem is always remembering where we left off. My DH suggusted that I move my hair tie I keep on my wrist from one side to the other to help me remember.
Yes, some babies prefer one side at a time only.
It makes sense that if you have a strong supply and a fast flow, your DD may be getting satisfied by one side at a time, and more quickly.
You could pump a little to relieve the discomfort, but just a little so as not to increase supply too much. (Just one idea--you could serve your expressed milk to your son, to give him a little multivitamin/immunity burst).
Hopefully your body will regulate quickly. Just keep on top of any mastitis symptoms, and nip them in the bud. I had it once but got in for antibiotics the first day I felt it come on, and so it was very mild and I felt better the next day.
