so the LOs are going to the nursery in thier own cribs this weekend.. i have 1 baby monitor (cheap) but im a neurotic 1st time mom and like that i can hear the breathe when they sleep since thier crib is currently like 3 feet from the bed.  with them in the other room and 1 monitor i will only be able to hear them whine or cry.  should i get 2 monitors? what do you do?  thier cribs are 3 feet apart w/ changing table in the middle (thats where i was guna put monitor)

TIA

Re: baby monitors

  • Stick with one monitor... you will more than likely lose a TON of sleep the first few nights, but you will get used to it.  We have a clock that ticks in the nursery and I can hear it on the monitor.. it helped ease my worries when we initially put them in their cribs.(if i can hear a clock tick, i could hear them if they need me)  We have a graco monitor and it works well.

  • btw - our monitor is at the end of one crib - across the room from the other.  I can hear the baby (DS) across the room snore sometimes (LOL)... it picks up more than you think.

  • We only used 1 monitor and it was a cheap one. We had our girls in the nursery in their own cribs from day one and I could always hear everything in their room. I had the monitor up on a shelf above the changing table across the room from their cribs and you would be amazed how much you hear them.

I actually had to turn my monitor so low you can barely hear anything because it picked up so much of their sounds, I heard every movement and noise (babies are really gassy and make lots of sounds when they sleep) they made and I was getting zero sleep. I might as well have had them in the room next to me, it picked up soo much.

My DH heard nothing. We both got up together to feed the girls when they were young so we could get it done as quickly as possible and both get as much sleep as possible and I would always have to wake him because he couldn't hear the babies crying. Then when they were old enough not to wake both when only 1 got up, we were each assigned a baby a night and you got up with your baby to feed. I still had to wake him up to go get his baby because he never heard her.

I would try it with just 1 first, I think you are going to be surprised how much you hear in there. Once the girls hit 1 year old I don't even use the monitor in my room anymore at night. If they are really crying I hear them anyway from down the hall with their door shut. Mom's just hear it all, we cannot tune out our own children. Now I only use the monitor during nap time and I don't turn it on until about a half an hour before they get up from nap, because if they cry I can hear them all the way downstairs with their door shut. I always hear them.
