Hi popping over from 2nd tri to ask ....
for those who had to take the 3hr test for gd, did you change your diet the few days prior? The lab lady said no need to but I read all over about people eating extra carbs in the days before the test. Does anyone know why some dr's say to eat extra carbs and some dont?
thanks ladies ![]()

Re: 3 hr gd testing question
Just this. I have no idea why some people are told to eat a carb-heavy diet and some are not. I had never heard anything like that until the bump.
I was supposed to "sugar load" for 3 days prior, then fast the night before, but not all doctors have you do this. I never did ask mine why, but I've read that it's to prepare your body to help lessen the shock of the glucose drink. I can't say I stuck to it 100%, but I did make sure to get in a good amount of carbs and sugar for those 3 days.
Oddly, this makes sense to me. I failed the 3 hour but haven't had one elevated number since testing and haven't changed my diet at all. My doctor thinks the test was a fluke but now wondering if doing this would have helped at all.
I just want to pass the test lol. I am totally confused though because to eat carbs in the days before to "lessen the shock" of the sugar drink after the fast seems resonable but it also seems reasonable that that could cause you to fail.
Any nurses in here know??
I asked this same question earlier cause it was me who's doctor has her "carb overloading" on 300 extra grams of crabs for 3 days then fast the day of the test. My test is friday so today is day 1 and i'm having a really hard time... I've eaten WAY more carb heavy food than I normally do and I feel sick because of it.
I did call my MIL after posting because she is the receptionist at an OB so I had her ask her nurse there. She said they don't have their patients eat any different, just the fasting.
I don't know that I'll keep this up for 2 more days... I mean if I don't eat like this normally isn't it just setting me up to fail???

I asked this same question a few days ago and got a big range of answers. I was told to eat normally too, except to fast starting at midnight the night before (which would be 8 hours of fasting). I pretty much ate normally, but for the two days prior tried to cut out empty sugars and eat whole grains instead of processed grains when eating carbs, and eat more protein. I also stopped eating at 7 pm the night before. I passed. However, I think if you have GD, it really doesn't matter how you eat - you can't trick the test into passing you. Good luck!
