Ok so once a day I pull back the skin on K's penis and wipe it clean (he is a little chunky and it hides for the most part in his fat pad) This morning fine, not red or irritated.
Today when giving him a bath I was washing him there and he started to cry, I noticed it was all red just below the head of the penis. Like really red. I applied some diaper cream to it - and am hoping it will get better over night. He has never had a diaper rash except for a 1/2 a day from diarrhea, and he isn't red anywhere else.
Has anyone else had this? How long should I wait until I take him to the pedi for it? Should I be putting something else besides diaper cream? I feel so bad for him, normally he LOVEs his bath, but today he only cried.
PS I will probably delete this after I get my responses so it doesn't come up in a google search about penis rashes... FYI Its amazing what google picks up!
Re: Mom of boys...Rash on penis(read this post talks about genitals)
Is he circumcised? DS had to get a prescription from the dermatologist for yeast infection cream. It's common with boys. So, I would definitely goto the pediatrician.
Edit: I don't know why I said dermatologist! I meant pediatrician.
Just sounds a little irritated. Keep his diaper off as much as possible. Our pedi recommends a clear ointment (Aquaphor) for around his penis and a cream for his butt. Make sure his skin is dry before applying.
FWIW, I don't think you need to worry about deleting. It's a medical question...;)
Our DS is circumcised and when we pull his skin back and wipe (everyday we do this) he is a little red...but does not seem bothered by it. Pedi said he was okay (we took him in). But pedi did say that if he gets irritated, use petroleum jelly like we did when he was first circumcised to prevent sticking to the diaper. No cream - that sounds like it may make things worse.
FWIW - We use Lansinoh wipes on that area (no alcohol and it's moisturizing).
Actually you are. It helps keep it from sticking and reattaching. Obviously not to the point of discomfort, but enough to clean the penis.

It is normal for some babies to still have some foreskin left after circumcision that the penis retracts inside of. My husband says as they grow up and.... to be perfectly blunt.... start having more erections/go through puberty, the penis will kind of grow out of this and stay outside of the foreskin better. It is important to retract the extra foreskin of circumcised babies daily so that adhesions/scar tissue doesn't form between the foreskin and the head of the penis.
Completely normal for many circumcised boys...it'll go away when he's around 2 (when he loses the baby fat).
Sooo sorry - got stuck skyping with a friend who I never get to talk to who is newly pregnant!
But yes, he is circumsized, I have to pull it back bc he has a large fat pad, and he tends to go inside a bit. That is what my pedi told me to do.
Thank you so much for your answers - and thanks grin for the fwiw - you are probably right.
Thanks - thats some good advice!
