My mom and I were discussing anesthesia for IVF.
I told her I thought general anesthesia was used, and that I'd had it before when I had 4 impacted wisdom teeth removed. She said when I had that oral surgery she thought I didn't have general anesthesia but some kind of twilight/local/gas combination. All I know is I was completely knocked out. She thought that likely I'd have the same kind of anesthesia for ER b/c it's a quick procedure (isn't it?) and that general anesthesia is usually used for surgeries where they need you out for hours at a time.
Obviously neither of us have any idea what we're talking about, so could anyone enlighten me? I'm trying to figure out if a) it's general for IVF and b) whether from what I described it sounds like I've been under it before.
Also - sorry if this is a dumb question, but it's only for ER and not ET right?

Re: Anesthesia for IVF
The anesthesia is only for ER, not ET. ET's the easy part
Usually it's general anesthesia for ER where they put an IV in your vein, and the anesthesia (depending on which on they use) is flown through the IV to knock you out.
My RE uses the twilight anesthesia. It knocks you out and you don't remember anything, but you are still able to breathe on your own. Recovery time is much quicker than general anesthesia.
And yes, it's only for ER.
I did not have general anesthesia.
nothing for the ET
This. It is considered general anesthesia if they have to intubate you (when a machine would help you breathe). I think most ERs are done under twilight anesthesia. I was totally out, but I could breathe on my own.
I think I was given for my ER Profonal, the Michale Jackson drug of choice. But I am not 100% sure. The procedure itself is quick only like 15 20mintues. My ER's were only the second time I had ever had Anesthesia so I had a bad reaction to it and the pain meds they give you after. I also had slight OHSS after my first ER so I was kind of a mess.
Second ER was easier but had the same reaction to the meds..
For the ET you just take 2 valium with a full bladder. It is much less invasive..
Both of these!
IVF #1 = BFP!! So blessed to have our baby boy! IVF #2 = Convert to frozen - 1 frostie! IVF #3 = Convert to frozen - 1 frostie! FET #1 = 8/14, Two transferred, One stuck! Praying for another healthy miracle! Due: 5/2/13
This is my understanding. With general anesthesia, you are intubated in case you stop breathing. I had heart surgery last year and I was only under twilight anesthesia. I vaguely remember having to pee twice during the surgery. Though I remember nothing else about the surgery. I guess stopping a surgeon to pee is dramatic enough for me to have a memory of it.

My RE also prescribes a Valium for the ET
