If you read the Twilight books...

Would you say that they are appropriate for an 11 year old? My OB asked me this morning if I thought he should let his 11 year old read them because she wants to and he doesn't want to discourage reading.

I said it depends on what their family considers appropriate...there's no swearing or descriptive sex, but some parents might still be uncomfortable with the themes. What age do you think it's OK for?

Sure.  I was an avid book reader at that age and found nothing inappropriate about the books at all.  I would let Anna read them at 11.

I say no personally.  The content is quite mature IMO (and I'm by no means a prude)  I think 14-15 would be more appropriate.

I can't think of anything that seems inappropriate for an 11-year-old.  But I was reading way inappropriate books at that age, so I'm no help.

This.  And really - at that age, I'd do all I can to encourage reading.  There are far worse things to read than Twilight.

I know....my mom got a call from my school in 6th grade because I was reading VC Andrews in class. I figured I am not the best judge for this question lol (for the record, my mom was like, "whatever, she's reading!")

like PP, I was reading inappropriate books at that age too. I think it is the "norm" to read books like that around that age. The last book is the only book that discusses sex. I don't think it was that graphic either. I am sure they know what sex is by then anyway.

I don't think there was anything inappropriate in the books -- maybe a little in the fourth book -- but they should be fine.  I think it is easier for us to see an odd story line and maybe worrisome character relationships, but an 11 year old probably won't pick up on that.

Yes. It is a fairly good message and there is little objectionable in them. No swearing, no unmarried sex, no descriptive sex scenes, etc.

Unless you object to vampires that drink animal blood and kill other vampires, it works well. And it even has a Christian undertone.

The first 3 would be totally fine, the last one is the only one that has some questionable content for an 11 year old.

I was always such a huge reader that my mom gave up trying to censor what I read.  There was no way she could even keep up!  

In 6th-7th grade I read ALL of Terry McMillan's very very very spicy and trashy novels.  In retrospect I had no business reading that smut. lol

And yeah, Twilight is more appropriate than what i was reading... at that age I was reading my dad's stephen king and grandma's vc andrews books!

Janine - I am at the end of the fourth one. The sex stuff was pretty disappointing I would let my girls read them at that age.

I would be weary of the last one, but I suppose it's nothing worse then what they see on tv.

i think the first too are perfectly fine, but the 3rd and 4th are a bit more mature.  At 11 and 12 I was ready things like Lolita, Anna Karina, Romeo and Juliet, so I would probably let DD read them at that age, no problem.

well its more sex then we got in HP at least ;p. I am still dying to figure out how they will film all of it. probably artful cutaways, unfort.

I still haven't read any Harry Potter :P Might start those next. I don't know if I can watch any more of the Twilight movies though...the acting was just painful lol

I think they're entirely appropriate for tweens.

You ladies make some very good points about what we were reading at that age.  I was reading Judy Blume's "Forever".  I guess I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't let my 11 year old daughter read Twilight.

I'm just glad I've read them first so I can discuss them with her.  That would be my stipulation for books she wants to read that I'm not so sure about.

Yeah, I suggested that to my doctor too. I told him that they are an extremely easy read and he or his wife could probably skim through them in a week or two (depending on how much free time they have).
