High-Risk Pregnancy

How High and How Swollen

I am not sure if high BP, puts me on this board, but I thought you guys would be the most helpful. How high was your BP and how swollen were you when your doctor said that was enough work? TIA

Re: How High and How Swollen

  • I never really swelled until I was in labor, but my BP was pretty high.  At 30 weeks I was in the hospital with a BP of 160-190/110-120.  I was on complete bedrest after that to control my BP.  If I was up for more than a few minutes it would jump right back up.  No meds were helpful in contoling my BP.

Do you have chronic hypertension or pregnancy induced hypertension?  This pregnancy my BP started going up at 21 weeks and my ob put me on meds.  So far it is working very well.  I haven't had to go on bedrest and my bp is great.

  • At 19 weeks I was borderline high bp at 138/88 and my feet were very swollen.  My doc told me to say the word and she would pull me from work, but I really want to work as long as I possibly can to ensure time after the baby is born to take mat leave.
  • I was swollen since my 20th week but my blood pressure didn't spike until the 34th week. I was 150/90 when they pulled me from work. Keep in mind that my pressure is usually pretty low-the highest was 120/80. So once my bottom number started creeping past 80 they became concerned.
  • swollen since about week 12/13.  HPB started at 28 weeks (150/90 and 160/95) but creeping up every week.  I was pulled from work and put on bedrest.  I gave birth at 35 weeks.
  • I was never told no more work and my BP got up to 140/94 and that was on meds.  I was never really swollen though.  I ended up starting my mat leave at 36 weeks because of my employer's long term disability insurance.
  • By 37.5 weeks I had a BP of 150/95 at the doc's office (130s/80s at home) and was really, really swollen. I was taken off work at that point, but it was literally only one day before my leave started anyway.

  • I have been 140s/80s since week 16.  I am getting more and more swollen, but it has been gradual.

I expect I am going to be taken off of work this afternoon and put on modified bedrest at home.

  • I have had PIH with 3 out of 4 of my babies. My 1st was born at 34weeks because I had Pre E. With my 3rd I went into the hospital in labor and my BP was 165/125 the doctor freaked. I am having notching already so the doc has me on a baby aspirin until 34weeks to hopefully prevent it this time
  • everything was fine until i hit the third tri & swelled up like an elephant.  went to see my midwife because i was feeling "off".  BP was insanely high (180/100) & i had +3 protein.  was checked into the hospital immediately for steroid shots for baby's lungs & mag. sulfate so i did not have a stroke.  baby was born a couple of days later once my labs started to go sour (HELLP).  i would play it safe if i were you.  every day you stay pregnant is fewer & fewer days in the NICU (the scariest place on earth).  if i could go back, if i knew my bp was high, i would have laid in bed for months if my dd would have gone to term (or closer).  having a preemie is more than just having a small baby.  these small babies have lasting effects for years or even their entire lives (cerebral palsy, mental retardation to name a couple of devastating possibilities).
