Critique this job offer

I think I know what I want to do, but looking for your thoughts...

I was laid off in March and have been on unemployment since. I am have been working towards getting my teaching certification in PA and have just found out that I have to take 1 college Math course but can get a temporary permit. However, it looks the earliest I'll get a teaching job would be for the Fall.

The job I had before the job that laid me off contacted me last night. My old boss had to terminate someone and it leaves them short handed. She asked if I'd be interested in coming back for a few months, temporarily, part-time.

I LOVED this job - didn't want to leave - except it is a 50-mile commute each way. The pay is good. There would be no benefits or anything. It would probably be 3-4 months.

DH is also laid off and he is looking for a job as well. He could watch DD until he finds a job or she could go back to daycare (at least part-time).

I do not know if I would take a hit in the unemployment. Or, if it is worth it to put DD back in daycare.

What do you think?

  • I think if you have a chance to work, you should take it. If your husband isn't working, there isn't any reason he couldn't care for your DD is there? So you wouldn't have childcare costs and you would be bringing in some money. Even if this job is only temporary, you could make some contacts there that could help you find a permanent job.
  • I would take it!!

  • As far as part-time...does that mean 2-3 whole days a week.  It is half days it would not be worth the 100 mile commute IMO.  Also, will the amount you make be as much as you get on unemployment.  In Michigan there is a cap on unemployment.  If you have to put DD in daycare...how much will you really be bringing home...more than unemployment (when you can still be home with DD).  You just have to weigh the pros and cons within your family and what is best for you.  If you are going to teach in the Fall it might be better to stay on unemployment (I have heard they are extending it yet again) and take your last Math class.  I understand you really LOVE this job...but it is not going to be YOUR  job...kwim?
  • Can you take the job and still do your math class?  If this is temporary and you could still do the teaching thing in the fall, that would be good.

  • Chelle- the job is in Wynnewood :)
  • haha, your job is where I live!  I don't know Pearlie -- that's a big commute. I'd have to sit and do the math to see if it's really worth it...
  • Hey VC,

I was working on an email to you... we'd be backyard mates :)
