DS has been sleeping like crud lately

so therefore I'm not sleeping very well either. We still use a monitor, because his bedroom is upstairs (our's is down) and on the other side of the house, so w/o it, I woudn't be able to hear him unless he was screaming.

Lately, he has not been sleeping well at all. He will wake randomly throughout the night (talk, yell, have strong dreams/nightmares) and then go back to sleep). I rarely have to go up there, but I still wake from hearing him over the monitor. He hasn't been taking his normal longish naps either (1.5 hours at the most) and is still getting up at his usual "early" time of 7:00, sometimes 6:45. Oh, I miss those 9:00am wake up times!

After a very short nap today, I tried putting him to bed a 1/2 an hour earlier tonight, but he just stayed awake talking to himself for at least an hour before I finally had to go up there and tell him that it was time to stop talking and go to sleep. He did then go to sleep.

I wonder if there is some sort of wakeful stage for 3 year olds. I doubt it and I'm probably just reaching for reasoning, but......

Thanks for letting me vent. :-)

  • I'm right there with you.  DD will get up about 3-10 times a night and come into our room.  It's so annoying!  Because then I have to get up and tuck her back in bc she wont go to bed unless I do.

Maybe there is some sort of 3 year old sleep thing.  I'm going to go with it and I'm glad we aren't alone.

  • Thankfully, R sleeps well....once she's asleep.  It has been taking us up to 2 hours to get her to stay in bed and go to sleep.  It's worse when she's taken a nap that day, but she really still needs it.  She is usually up by 6am, and is a disaster by 4pm is she doesn't nap.

She does get up during the night, but goes back to bed on her own.  I don't always hear her, but I know when she's been up because there are toys in the hallway that she's dropped over the gate.  She even tells me some mornings, "I can't sleep very well last night".

  • Hi there!  My DS is the same age and his sleep has been all over the map lately too.  He is typically a very good sleeper and napper, so I really think it has something to do with growth/learning spurt and/or his body trying to start reducing naps and regulating a new sleep schedule.  Our naps were 3 hrs a few months ago too, but now 2 hrs is generally a good nap for him.  It is often 1.5 too, which sucks but I know many 3 yr olds don't nap at all, so I"m trying to remember I'm lucky in that

Hey. Ya, ds has always been a good sleeper. I have a feeling you are right about the body trying to regulate. He does still need some type of nap though. He is just too sassy and naughty without one...lol. Last night was horrible. I hope we don't have repeat. I had to put the monitor in the bathroom (just to get a little bit of uninterrupted sleep).
