I am so stressed about what sort of childcare for school

DD will be going to school next year. There is no formal before and after school program offered for her school. I am so worried about where she's going to end up. Any advice? She is in a fantastic day care centre now and I am worried she's going to end up sitting in some babysitter's house watching TV for 2 hours a day. It's enough to make me want to stay home.

  • Does the center offer before/after school care?  The center we just left has vans that pick up their kids at the local elemtary schools for the before/after school care program.

  • mine aren't in school yet, but the Catholic schools in our area offer a Latch-Key type program, while most of the public schools don't.

When I was a kid, my mom worked PT, and she had something set up with a neighbor where they took each other's kids on the days they worked.  I loved it!

  • There are no centres that offer before and after for my dd's school.
  • That's tough that there aren't any centers offering care.  What about a SAHM that has children the same age as your DD so that she has someone to play with?  When I was young I went to a SAHM house after school.  Her son was in my class....sure, we didn't have a structured set-up, we mostly played outside, colored or watched cartoons but I think it was a good way to unwind after the school day.  I have wonderful memories of going to her house and she also kept me when I was sick and couldn't go to school.  She was such a nice lady!!  (Note, I don't think it's a big deal for school aged kids to watch an hour of TV so we may differ on that.)
  • You probably aren't the only set of parents having to deal with a similar situation at her school. I would talk with the principle about your situation and ask if she any advice or recommendations for care. I bet there is a center that does provide before/after school care and you are just unaware of it.

Thanks, but there's not. I've checked.

Likely will have to find a SAHM to watch her, which is not what I want. I'd be okay with it for gr 1+ when she's in school al day, but for K, she'll only be in school 2.5 hours/day.  Everyone else I know that attends that school has a nanny so there is no issue for them.

  • Rather than another SAHM, can you see if anyone would be willing to do a modified nanny-share type of thing?  You pay some money so that the nanny gets a bit more for watching another child, and the full time nanny user (that sounds wrong!) pays a bit less since their nanny is watching another child.

    DD1 is 3, DD2 is 1.
