shots at birth?

does anyone know what shots are typically given at the babys birth??  i know they do a HepB vaccine, and im pretty sure there is 1 or 2 more but can't think of them.

anyone know what they are??

i know this is a slightly controversial subject but ill let it out... we've chosen to wait on the HepB vaccine until later in LOs life, and i'd like to do more research on the others to decide if we should wait on all of them or not.....

TIA!! :)

Re: shots at birth?

  • I think that last week at our childbirth class they said they do a shot of vitamin K at shortly after birth too.

Hep B Vaccine (you can wait/refuse this)

Vitamin K Shot: (a must!)  Your baby will typically have low levels of vitamin K when he or she isborn. Vitamin K is needed for blood clotting, so your baby will usuallyreceive a vitamin K shot immediately after birth. This will helpprevent a rare but serious bleeding problem known as hemorrhagicdisease of the newborn.

Eye ointment (can be delayed a couple of hours but needs to be given ASAP): Your baby will receive antibiotic eye ointment or eye drops to preventbacterial infections that he or she may pick up at birth.

thanks for all the answers! :)  im a little confused w/ the vitamin k shot though...  does anyone know any pros/cons of it.  i understand its for the bleeding in the brain thing, and im all for stopping/preventing that (of course), but can that not be done by supplementing myself since i will be breast feeding??  i know it doesnt pass on to the fetus, but if started before the birth would LO get enough after birth via breast milk??

You can actually pass on the vitamin K shot (at least where I am at) and they say that breastmilk doesn't carry enough, but I have problems believing that.  Just like I have problems with the vitamin D information, but that's not relavent here.  Breastmilk contains everything that baby needs, and it only takes a couple of days for the clotting components to start once baby is born, so in my opinion vitamin K is unnecessary.  However, you can suppliment yourself with vitamin K and it will pass onto the baby with no problems.  If you are having a boy and getting him circumsiced though, then I would definately do the vitamin K shot for that reason.
