Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Pronounce this name:

Aimee.

I thought it was cut and dry "Amy", pretty standard. I know a girl named Aimee who pronounces it that way.

Today I met a doula. She pronounces it I-may.

I know, i know, my name is Michelle and I could pronounce it LaDashA if I wanted to, but what would you think if you just read it not heard it?

Re: Pronounce this name:

  • Well my son's name is Nicholas but it's pronounced Bob. Don't judge me.

  • Yeah... that is Amy. That poor child.
  • I would think Amy.  DH and I had a housemate named Aimee and we are still great friends.
  • Hmmm. Well, my dad's name is Jaime and he pronounces it Hi-may, so I guess this isn't that out there.

But, no, I wouldn't have read Aimee and chosen to pronounce it the way you describe.

That's funny. Maybe it is actually "Amy" but she hates her name so she started pronouncing it different. My maiden name is horrible, the same last name as a former childhood TV personality that got into some dirty man trouble and at one point in middle school I started trying pronounce my last name differently. That lasted a day or 2 until it came off even worse than my actual last name.

  • I know an Amy who spells it like that.?
  • I would have read it Aimee. Very strange way to pronounce. That is for sure!

Lol maybe, she already spells it wrong ;) (I'm an Amy) so maybe she thought she'd go all the way and make up a pronunciation too.

  • It is pronounced Amy. Sorry, you will not convince me different considering this is MY name, and I use that spelling. I have NEVER heard it pronounced differently and I had teachers that butchered my 4 letter maiden last name. (that was literally spelled exactly how it was said)

My cousin is Aimee pronounced Amy. But when she was younger she thought it was cool to call herself I-may.

On another note - I heard the name LaDashA last night for the first time ever.  We had a big laugh about it because my friend is a teacher and the student spells it La-A and she couldn't figure it out the first time she saw it.  Is this a commonly made fun of name? Am I just out of the loop?

  • I would think both ways.

There's a well known photog in MN Noemi Hedrick. Her name is pronounced No-amy.

    (here's her profile:)

  • I think it's weird that she pronounces it I-may.  I would NOT think it was weird if she pronounced it A-may.  Evelyn Waugh had a character with a name spelled that way and the prounounced the 2nd way.  It's of French origin, and the word itself in French means like/love

  • It's the French spelling of Amy.  I went to high school with a girl who spelled it that way and pronounced it Ah-may, like the French.  My guess is the woman had her French wrong.
  • This is the name of a good friend of mine from Mississippi and she pronounces it ah-may and their is an accent over the first "e."  It is a french name (her last name is also french).

  • I went to school with a girl who pronounced it Eh-may. Annoying to me.

Just because it's your name and you've never heard it pronounced differently doesn't mean it couldn't be and isn't pronounced a different way.

It is an urban legend :-)

Maybe she was just a bit heavy on the first letter and WAS pronouncing it Ah-may? I had a squirmy Jack with me and might have misheard.

That would make more sense, I just have never heard that before!

I also thought it was just a bastardized spelling of Amy (my sister's name). Good info, thanks!

  • I am going to go with the people who say it's the French spelling/pronunciation. I'm from South Louisiana and knew a couple of people growing up who pronounced it Ah-may.
  • I'd pronounce it Amy, but I've known Aimees who pronounced it Ah-meh or Ah-mee (The French spelling and the French pronunciation). Perhaps this woman just had an accent that put a strange harness on the "ah" making it sound like "eye"?

  • My name is Aimee, and in English-speaking America, it's pronounced as "Amy".

In France, or in some parts of the US/Canada where French influence is heavy, you may find it pronounced as Ah-MAY, or Ah-MEE. Ah-MEE would be closer the correct way to actually pronounce the word in French.

My entire family is French-Canadian, and they all say Ah-MEE.

  • Amy for sure.  I've known a few "Amy"s who spell their name this way.
  • AMY.

What is up with these people?!

  • Well, I think the doula's parents were illiterate.

But my middle name is Agatha, which the rest of the world pronounces Agg-uh-thuh. But I'm named for my great-grandma, and it's pronounced Uh-
    GAY-thuh, like hers.

Sometimes, you run into names that people saw but never heard said aloud, so they dont know how it's pronounced. My grandma had a sister named Nina that's pronounced like Nine-ah, and a friend named Ione, which is actually pronounced Eye-oh-nee but she pronounces Eye-own.
