Keeping baby's hands warm at night

We have our thermastat set to 70 at night, Charlie is either in a long sleeved pj (sometimes the pjs have fabric covering the hands) and in a sleepsak, or other times in a pj and swaddle. I always have a hat on him too. When he is not in the swaddle, his hands are really cold. I've tried putting socks on them but they fall off and I have those mittens (so they don't scratch his face) but they aren't warm at all. Any suggestions? I would just swaddle him every night but I haven't mastered the swaddle and I'm trying to not wake up DH at night as much as possible (he is the swaddle master in the household).

Re: Keeping baby's hands warm at night

  • Their hands just are cold at that age due to poor circulation not because baby is cold. If you're keeping your house at 70, I"m sure he is warm enough. If you want to swaddle, we loved the halo sleep sack w/swaddle: https://www.halosleep.com/products/detail/28/micro-fleece_sleepsack_swaddle/33/micro-fleece_sleepsack_swaddle/

I guarantee you won't need DH's help with it!

  • I swaddled at that stage every time she went to sleep. If you can get a copy of the Happiest Baby on the Block DVD, he shows a great method to swaddle tightly so it doesn't come open. Also you can buy those velcro swaddle blankets that make it easier. My kid didn't like them, because she always wanted to wriggle a bit in there. Lots of folks on here recommend that Miracle Blanket but I feel like it hyperextends the baby's arms a bit, so I didn't like the idea and also my baby would have cried.

the Aden and Anais receiving blankets are nice for swaddling. If you need the HBOTB DVD, I have one that you could have. I could send it or something. my email is bump name @ gmail dot com.

  • We use the kiddopatomus swaddle me blankets and they are super easy to use/put on!  That's what we put Lilly into every night and we just recently got a woombie (which is also very easy to put on).

If your thermostat is set at 70, I am sure he is OK...Lilly's hands get cold but I know she isn't cold...I think it has to do with poorer circulation at this age.

  • I used to get the onsie sleepers that had fold over cuffs, like the picture below, then I wouldn't have to worry about the socks falling off.  It also helps the child not scratch themself.

  • Thanks everyone. I didn't realize it was due to poor cicrulation, now i don't feel bad. :)

We did watch happiest baby on the block, I just need to take the time to keep practicing. I seem to get stuck at the same point and need DH's help. I think I'll take a look at that sleep sak/swaddle item or the kiddopotamus - thanks for the suggestions!

  • It is true that the hands tend to be colder than the rest of the body but if they are like little icicles, then the baby may be too cold as well.
