bassinet pad/mattress?

Question for you ladies...

We weren't planning on getting a bassinet, but were given one as a gift.  The "mattress" that comes with it is a thin pad (kind of like a portable changing pad, but a little thicker).  It's nothing near as firm as our crib mattress.  I'm worried about it not being firm enough for LO.

My question is, do I need an actual mattress?  If so, has anyone found a good one out there for an oval-shaped bassinet?

Re: bassinet pad/mattress?

  • I had the same issue with ours.  I bought an egg crate mattress pad from walmart for $9 and cut it to fit the bassinet.  I put it under the actual mattress and it is much better.  If you cut two pieces and put the bumpy sides together it just makes it more cushioned.  Looks much more comfy now.

  • I never thought of that.  It sure beats the only one I'm finding online that's $99!

  • It is supposed to be that thin. I would not recommend adding any extra foam on top of or under it..  That is a potential suffocation hazzard, not to mention if the baby somehow gets their hand underneath the mattress and rips off a piece, they can put it in their mouth and choke.
  • Its not supposed to be "comfy." Babies need harder surfaces. Its safer for them.

Yes, I'm worried about that too...the one that came with it is pretty flimsy.  That's what's bothering me.  It's similar to this:

  • The bassinet I have is the round wood one, also made by Badger Basket. It has the same mattress. I used it for my son for his first three months.  The mattress is designed to meet safety standards, and babies, especially newborns need firm sleeping surfaces.  It reduces the risks of SIDS greatly.

Please do not follow the advice of someone who suggests adding extra foam or cushioning to a baby's sleep area.  That is extremely dangerous.  I'm sure if you Google the subject, there is info about it.

  • I wrapped a little quilted pee pad over ours and it adds a little cushion but it still firm and of course, absorbs pee.
