Exclusive pumpers please come in!

I plan on exclusively pumping my breastmilk for LO and today my fiance came up with a question I'd never even thought of. On our way home from our Birthing Class today he said "You plan on exclusively pumping, can Colostrum be pumped?" This would have been a perfect question while we were still in class where there would be someone who might be able to answer. I'd think it'd be fine but I thought I'd ask to make sure. I don't have any meetings with the lactation consultant for quite a while and don't know who else to ask.TIA!

  • Yes... My baby was in the NICU so I had to pump and the nurse told me to bring in whatever I got so he could get the colostrum

  • Yes, it wont be much but every drop counts.  I usually only had enough to fill up half a syringe but they wanted anything I could pump....even if it were literally 2 drops.

  • Yes.  It is not very much at all and very thick and yellow.  But it will come out.
  • When I had just colostrum, I found it much easier to hand express into a little bowl.  Then I could suck the colostrum up into a little syringe.  Since it's so thick and sticky, I found that it would get stuck in the hard to reach areas of my sheilds, and I couldn't get to all of it.  Once I started hand expressing into the bowl, I found I could give more of it to my LO since it was more accessible.
