I delivered at 33 wks 6 days and they had no idea why... had high white blood cell count - but they didn't know why. I had a completely normal pregnancy with zero problems. The labor was totally out of the blue. I don't know how normal it is to deliver that early "for no reason." I'm mostly curious because I know you have a much higher risk to deliver early in your subsequent pregnancies. (I know it's a conversation for my doctor - which we will have when the time comes). Thankfully all is well with DD, btw.
Re: Anyone have no idea why they delivered early?
Well, with a high white cell count, you probably had an infection somewhere. Did they test the placenta or anything like that?
I'm sure that when/if you decide to get pregnant again, your next OB will want to chat about the risks.
I delivered VERY quickly at 26 weeks, with no idea why. The pathology on my placenta came back with no signs of any infection. Because I delivered in the triage department of L&D within 10 minutes of getting to the hospital, I had no monitors on me prior to delivery.
My doctor has told me that as a rough estimate, about half the women who deliver early won't know a specific cause. I'm not sure how accurate that is, but all I know is that I WON'T know, and that's going to cause a ton of anxiety for my next pregnancy (whenever that is.)
My water broke at 35 weeks and there is lots of speculation as to why, but no for sure reasons. Because I had a healthy pregnancy otherwise, Drs. have been considering me normal risk with extra monitoring (i.e., whenever I'm worried about something, I get an u/s). I just hit 34 weeks with my second pregnancy and so far no problems. But I'm a total nervous wreck. I think it is normal to be anxious, though, especially after you've delivered early.
Btw, I had one doctor tell me I had a 50-70% chance of delivering early again and another tell me less than 10%, so the assessment may vary drastically among doctors, too. . . just for when you talk to your OB.
I delievered Harmon slightly early b/c he was IUGR. It was safer to have him out and eating than in and possibly not getting enough nutrients.
The cupcakes came early just b/c my body is SOOO tiny. It just couldn't handle the twin pregnancy.
My water broke at 29w6d. I had some spotting early on, and my water also broke with my first baby, but she was full term by the time it did. Those things both increase the risk I think, but I had no real risk factors other than that. I started having contractions and delivered at 30w4d after I developed an infection.
Me, my water broke at 34 weeks on the dot- no idea why, and I don't think they ever tested me. I asked a billion questions at my 6w pp follow up, and they had no answers, just that I would be monitored by a MFM next time.
What they don't know is that I am currently researching a new OB that is affiliated with a different hospital and MFM.
I had high bp spikes for the last 8 weeks of my pg and my OB didn't think they were a big deal. (I'm talking a good reading was 140s over 90s, some of the spikes topped 170s over +105), horrible headahes, etc...
There seems to be a water breaking for no apparent reason theme here ... I also have no idea why my water broke at 30w5d. I went into labor at 31w0d ... I guess because my water broke.
They ran all sorts of tests looking for an infection ... an amnio after my water broke, pathology on the placenta, etc etc. Nothing every came back that showed evidence of an infection (other than my water breaking in the first place).
So I have no idea why it happened, or if it will happen again.
So I have decided that a new OB/GYN is in order now.
same as many above...water broke at 33 weeks 0 days -nothing came back on placenta pathology report. I'm currently 18 weeks pregnant and I've been on the 17p shots since 12.5 weeks.
The 17p shots have been pretty successful for a lot of people although they don't know much about how/why they work and who they will work on. I'd ask your dr. about taking them for future pregnancies.
Mine could be from stress or an infection in my placenta. I went into labor and the doctor actually broke my water. A few minutes later my son was born at 30 weeks. But we still don't have an exact cause. My new ob said that if you sent 100 placentas to pathology to be looked at the majority of them would have some kind of bacterial present.
The latest I've read is they are doing research on the role genes and heredity. It's really scary how much the experts don't know about preterm labor.
