Bread Machine Recs?

J asked me what I wanted for mother's day (a ways off, but he likes to plan ahead), & I think a bread machine would be wonderful.  I love homemade bread, but don't ever seem to find enough time to make it.

Anyone have a really good one?  What do or you don't like about your's?

It needs to make loaves big enough for a very hungry family of 5.

Re: Bread Machine Recs?

  • I like mine, but it's super old (got it from my mom yeeeeeaaaarrrssss ago)  and it's small (not big enough to feed a large family)

so pretty much, my response is useless!  lol.  sorry ;)

  • i have a Red Star one that i got as a gift about 11 years ago. I go through kicks where i use it a lot, then shelf it for months at a time, but it always works wonderfully. I use it for 1.5 lb loaves. Sometimes the 2 lb loaves would rise too much during the bake cycle, and make a bit of a mess. However, I also like to use it just to make the dough, so i use the 2 lb ingredient ratios, and then i put it in 2 regular loaf pans and bake in the oven. the loaves look better that way and are better for making small sandwiches. I just don't like the way the loaves made in most machines are an awkward size, but the only machines i have seen that make horizontal loaves are prohibitively costly.

  • OOOH! I'm so glad you asked this question!

My FIL and I did tons of research before asking for our breadmakers at Xmas (we both wanted one and we each got one, LOL - now we have breadmaking contests - yummy!)

Here is the one we got:

So far: LOVE.  (and super inexpensive!)

  • For Christmas I got the Zojirushi Home Bakery (supreme?) and it is AWESOME! I think it runs about $200, but it makes great bread and since we're not going to be buying bread from the store anymore, it will probably save it's price over about a year (we eat a LOT of bread). It makes 2 lb. loaves, which usually lasts us about 2 days. It makes horizontal loaves, which is one of the reasons I chose this one. It also had great reviews. I usually put the ingredients in at night, then we have fresh bread in the morning!

It's on sale right now on Amazon:

ooooo!  I like that one!  I too would like more fresh bread & less store bought.  $3 a loaf is getting annoying.

  • I love my Cuisinart.  Our old one had a funny name, I'll have to think hard to remember it, but it lasted 10 years before it attempted suicide by throwing itself off the counter then went on to like another 5!

Bread machines with a funny name are awesome, too!
