Preemies

How much prevacid?

Is your LO on? What is their age/weight?

DS is almost 17 pounds and 7 months old.

We stopped his prevacid after surgery (we do this every time for a couple of reasons a) to see if the increase in pressure was the cause of the reflux and b) he always seems like he doesn't need it at all for a little while after surgery-probably due to the pain meds)

Anyway, I think we need to be put him back on it. He doesn't spit up AT ALL but he wakes up in the middle of the night arching his back and screaming. It is not shunt related (we have ruled that out and his neuro checks are intact, his soft spot is still fine, etc) and though I know his sleep is still probably pretty messed up post-op I am wondering if this is silent reflux eating his esophagus up at night and waking him up every 1-2 hours. It sucks :(

And I'm wondering where we stand on dosing.

I have a whole bottle in the fridge that is still some good and a new refill I'm sending DH to pick up today. Going to call the pedi to gather her thoughts on giving it twice a day or giving more but wanted to see how common that is.

TIA

Re: How much prevacid?

  •

Sounds like your DS is having silent reflux at night.  Been there.

We are doing the solutabs, once/day, 1/2 tab (7.5 mg).  At one point we were doing it twice a day at my request.  DS is 5 months and about 15 lbs. and seems to be getting a little better as he gets older, but for a while is was torture.

There's a lot of good info on https://www.marci-kids.com/ ...basically says that a lot of docs under-dose infants which is why the meds don't work sometimes.  A few months ago when I talked to my ped about increasing to 3x/day, he urged against it and said it wasn't necessary (although the research on this website says that infants metabolize a lot quicker and need it more often).

  • My LO is 6 months and 14lbs he takes the liquid prevacid once a day at 3.3ML

  • Loading the player...
  • LO is 4 months old, 8lbs, and on 1/2 solutab per day. Isn't there something about the liquid version going bad sooner, or is that something else?
  • Sounds like he does need the reflux meds.  John has been on prevacid since he was a few months old and pretty small.  Initially it was once a day and then it got bumped to 2x a day when he was 5 months old.  So, for the last year, he's been on prevacid 15mg solutabs twice a day.  He's now 22 lbs and still on it.

ETA:  Yes, babies do metabolize it faster so often they need it more than once a day, even though the drug is marketed as once a day for adults.

  • Thank you ladies! The liquid does go bad faster if your pharmacist does not know how to mix it correctly. He had issues taking the tablets but now that he is bigger maybe we can switch back to those & won't have to worry about stability (plus the flavor is awful). Interesting to read that infants usually need it more than once a day, I suspected as much. Hopefully we can get him on a comfortable dose soon :)
