Breastfeeding

? for BFers who started solids. . .

How much did your LO's consumption of breastmilk decrease when you started solids?

My little guy just started and he eats some solids for breakfast and dinner now. His milk consumption at daycare has gone down by 1/3 (5 oz). This shocked me. I thought it would go down a little bit, but I was surprised to see how much. He is also sleeping through the night all of the sudden.

  • My DD dropped a whole bottle when we introduced solid food. She went from three 4oz bottles to just two 4 oz bottles, so also 1/3. She was older though (7ish months) since we skipped cereal and did more of the BLW approach.

  • DD has been eating rice cereal for about a month and a half and one 2.5 oz container of veggie for about a month.  She still eats the same amount of BM each day.  The amount of cereal and veggie isn't enough to sustain her for three full hours like a BM feeding.  She gets cereal/veggie about 2 hours after BM and then BM again about 2 hours after that.  There's two times during the day when she gets BM twice in a row and she goes three hours between those feedings.  She STTN from about 7:30 to 5 so she doesn't eat during the night.  I BF her first thing in the morning (really just a snack so she can go back to sleep for a few more hours), she gets three 6 oz bottles while I'm at work, and I BF her twice in the evening (the second time she just comfort sucks for about 10 minutes to help her get sleepy for bedtime).

  • I'd be worried if he'd already dropped that much - BM is much more important that solids at this point; you don't want solids to replace BM too quickly.

I honestly didn't notice much change in his nursing until much closer to 9 months or so.  We did baby led weaning though so he was always self feeding and didn't eat 3 meals regularly until 9-10 months.

  • My girls both drink the same amount of BM as they did before we started solids.  They get lunch and dinner right now.
  • He's still taking the same amount (15 oz.) on the days he's at daycare, but I have definitely seen a decrease here at home.  His nursing sessions are much shorter (like 5-7 minutes long).
