TTC after 35

New to this and confused .. . (long)

Hello,

My name is Liz, and this is my first visit to the boards. I am 37 years old and have recently entered this world of TTC for the first time. I have to apologize now, because I am not familiar with all of the terminology and acronyms yet. (Is there some sort of list somewhere that decodes all these acronyms for me?? LOL) Anyway, back to my story. Sometimes I wish I hadn't waited so long to have kids. Unfortunately, that's just the way life has planned it for me. When I was 24 I got married (for the first time) to Mr. Wrong. After 2 years we were divorced. It took me almost 10 years after that to find Mr. Right. We got married in March of 2006, and he is 2 years younger than I am. We both wanted to enjoy our marriage for a while before TTC. I don't think my husband was very worried about the timeline, but in the back of my mind I could hear my biological clock ticking. We finally decided to start TTC in June of last year.  I was diagnosed with PCOS a year earlier, so I anticipated that we may have difficulty. So, having no success, I went to a fertility specialist in October 2009. He suggested I have an HSG and some blood work and my husband had sperm analasis done. His tests came out fine as well as my bloodwork. The HSG showed that my tubes were good, but I had a cyst in my uterus. In November I had it removed as well as having my ovaries drilled. My doctor said this is usually done in women with PCOS to help them ovulate. He then instructed me to test for ovulation for 5 days after my December period. I just finished the 5th day and I have no positive LH surge, so I went for an ultrasound today and some blood work. I should be getting a call tomorrow with further instructions. I feel stupid when I go to the doctors office because of all the terminology I'm not used to. When they ask me what cycle this is, I am confused. Huh?  Having PCOS, I rarely even get a period, so I'm not used to tracking anything. My doctor is really good and he explains everything in detail, but since today I only dealt with the nurses, I was a bit confused. They seem to think that everyone understands their "lingo". Well, let's see what the bloodwork tells me tomorrow. I'm sorry that this is so long and that I have been rambling, but I just needed to vent.

 Thanks for reading! Smile

  • Welcome, Liz!  I hope you get some answers from your doctor and some clarification.  Don't hesitate to ask if you need help with terminology, too!  On the bottom left side of the screen, you'll find Bump Board Glossary and that should help you with some terms on these boards.

I hope your stay here is short, too! GL!

  • Hi and welcome! There is a list of acronyms on the bottom left ("Bump Board Glossary), that should help you out. I took a few months for me to stop referring back to it :-). I am a few years older than my dh (as are quite a few other girls on this board) and I understand what you are talking about, my dh doesn't quite feel the need to "get things going" like I do.

You may also want to post on the infertility board, as there are many girls on there dealing with PCOS as well.

I would just try to be as upfront with the RE and nurses as possible, and explain to them that you don't have a regular cycle. I agree that it can be frustrating when they are using lingo that is unfamiliar. I've started asking for copies of all the tests, b/w, and diagnoses, so I can research and keep track of everything.

    Good luck!

  • Thank you so much. That glossary will definitely help me out. Looking at it I realized that my post would probably have been half as short if I had found it earlier. LOL Big Smile
  • Hi Liz! I'm Liz, too! :) I think it takes us all awhile to get used to all of the abbreviations, etc. My husband asked what DH stood for. He thought it was for Dickk Head! I think a lot of us on this board waited to meet the right man, and it has us all in the same boat of TTC after 35. I say that good things come to those who wait! A friend of mine has PCOS and had ovarian drilling too. She just had twins in June from IVF. Welcome and good luck!

  • Welcome and good luck TTC!  You will learn a lot on these boards.  Hope your stay here is short!
  • Welcome Lizette!  I'm sorry you're having problems with terms, etc..  I hope you can figure it all out and soon get that bundle you are waiting for.
  • Welcome to a great board and good luck.

  • Welcome and good luck to you!!

Lurking on this board and the Infertility board may help get a feel for all the terminology on the boards and in your Drs. office.  I know I learned a ton, just by lurking.  I also refer to the following website a lot for help in understanding the various tests and treatment:

  • Welcome and GL!

This is a great board, and you can ask anything you want.

I could have written parts of your post: I got married for the first time at nearly 37. I wanted some time with DH before trying to get pregnant - heck, we had only known each other for 9 months when we said I do! Then, my clock started ticking loudly, but he wasn't sure, and didn't understand the urgent need to get going if we were going to! We didn't start TTC until I was 39. EEK.

It sounds like you have a good doc and you're doing all the right things. I hope your stay  here is short.
