how bad is well water for babies?

we have (really lovely) well water, but we use the big ole bottles of Ozarka for the boys' bottles.  We had gotten a bunch of liquid love, ahem, I mean Similac from the Multiples program and while we went through that, we weren't using the water.  Now that we're out of that, I just realized we have no more of the big bottles of water.  So, this morning I had to use some of our well water.  I do have Jay getting more bottles from Costco on his way home today though, so they won't have to have the well water for long.

Tell me, it's not too bad, right?  They'll only have it for today!

  • ah good.  thanks!  yes, we do drink it and it has been tested and all that stuff.  I just knew I'd heard how babies shouldn't be drinking tap water, so I just wasn't sure.

    thank you, all-knowing Rosie.

  • It will be fine for one day.  You could boil it first if you're worried about it.

but ewwwww well water is nasty!  At least the stuff up in Michigan.  It sticks.  I almost threw up when I had to use well water to brush my teeth ::shudder::

  • ali-our well water is awesome!  and much better than NB city water.

And no, I've heard that well water does not have fluoride so we'll have to get that additive when they are drinking from the tap.

  • Actually - you should ask your pedi.  I cannot remember what it is in well water but there is something in it that is safe for adults but can be dangerous for kids. Again - I'm not real helpful but I'd ask your pedi before you switch.
  • My DH grew up with well water and his teeth have some odd colorations from the minerals.  There's like a line on his front teeth.  It's not hugely noticeable, but it's there.  Now, knowing my ILs, it's likely that the water was never tested so take that with a grain of salt.

That can also be from the antibiotic Tetracycline which used to be widely prescribed. From what I understand even if his mother took it while she was pregnant with him, it can cause the "lines".

I think like PP said, Nitrates and Bacteria are the main concern for babies with well/tap water.

    Hmm...  That makes more sense.

  • I don't know the answer to well water vs tap water vs bottled water.  But, I just wanted to say we bought the Nursery Water for DS when he was on formula.  It was kind of a PITA, but it was clean water w/flouride & I just didn't like our tap water at the time.  Once he started eating more solids and drinking juice (and we moved to a place w/better water), we started using tap.  I seriously never thought I would be that person that bought *special water* for their kiddo, but here I am...
