Question About High B/P

I'm sure this question is asked frequently here so I apologize for my potential redundancy.

I've had borderline high BP for the past month - My bottom number is usually under 80 but my top number has been bouncing around in the 140's.

Today my doctor said we may want to discuss induction if my BP is still high next week.

Is 144/70 really high enough to talk induction?

Re: Question About High B/P

  • My bp was 130/90 today and my dr also talked about induction in my future. He said he wants my bottom number in the 70's.

I wouldn't think your bp is high enough but it also depends on other factor like swelling, protein in urine etc.

  • They all seem different on how they approach it. I have been 150's/80's since 28 weeks. Have been on meds since 32 I think. My blood pressure has not gone down, I have severe swelling, and I am 2+ to 3+ protein. But, no pre-e. Still PIH.

After reading so many stories on here about BP and induction, I asked at my past appt. She said they wouldn't let me go past 39 weeks. Oh, and they really don't care about my swelling (said in nicer words). I guess since LO is still measuring and moving good, I am ok.

What other symptoms are you having?

  • I think it more depends on how baby is growing, if the placenta still looks good and the umbilical cord flow is normal.  Your bp's sound like mine were and my placenta was almost completely calcified by 32 weeks.  I would insist that you get a u/s to check all these things to better figure out when they should induce you.

  • Mine has been high, but controlled on BP meds since around 14 weeks and my OB has never mentioned an induction.  At 34 weeks it was around 140/90 (don't know the exact number), at 35 weeks I was 140/94 and the nurse was going to send me to L&D, at 36 weeks it came down to 136/90 and my OB upped my meds and this past week he said it was fine.  I was tested for pre-e two weeks ago and it sounds like I may get to have more bloodwork done before all is over.  I think each doctor is different though on how long they will let you go.

I asked at my last appointment if anything would be different for me when I go into labor and he said for the most part no, they'll test for pre-e when I get to the hospital and if my BP won't stay down give me IV meds and magnesium sulfate to prevent the possibility of seizures.

  • sounds like they are being careful.  You will be 37 weeks so you will be full term.  It could also depend on how you are trending.  Pre-e can come on very fast.  I went from PIH too pre-e to hellp in a matter of days.
