GD- Another Med Question

Did anyone that ended up on insulin start out on glyburide?  My doctor just prescribed it and I've been taking it but, it's a catagory C drug and insulin is a catagory B drug so, I would think it would be better for the baby.  I'm going to discuss this with my doctor and my aunt (she's a endocrinologist) but, I was just curious if anyone else out there is on Glyburide?

Re: GD- Another Med Question

  • I was with DD.  Not yet this time around.

  • Honestly, I was put right on insulin after we found that my fasting numbers were high because the OB's at my practice do not like putting pregnant women on glyburide.  I would suggest doing your own research and talking to your doctor like you mentioned.
  • My MFM doc was going to start me on Glyburide, but I asked to start on insulin. Glyburide is not FDA approved and that made me nervous. My DH is an emergency medicine doctor and has seen pg women in the ED on Glyburide whos sugar levels crashed and they passed out. He preferred I take insulin since you can control the dosages better than a pill. Those were are reasons, but you need to do what you think is best for you. GL!
  • I'm on glyburide 2.5 mg which is the smallest dose.  My doctor said it doesn't cross the placenta.  I had originally asked about metformin since I was on that for the first trimester and he said it does cross the placenta and that is why they start out with glyburide.  I didn't want to do insulin since it's only my fasting number that was a little high (100-105) and I didn't want to over medicate on the insulin.

I also asked the pharmacist and he said that it is the lowest dose and won't affect the baby.

  • After a lot of questions & research I personally decided to go with the insulin & skip the Glyburide.

Exactly this.  Insulin is already naturally produced in your body so it knows what to do with it and it doesn't cross the placenta to the baby.  Gylyburide is a medicine and it can potentially affect the baby.
