working moms: what's your morning routine?

DH is still at home with #2, but he will be going back to work (leaving at 5am) next week.  What is your routine for getting both kids ready and off to daycare?

Re: working moms: what's your morning routine?

  • I get up at 5, workout, shower, get myself 100% ready. Get the kids up at 6:30, dressed and down to eat, I start breakfast and Dh finishes it. He showers while I am getting them dressed. I leave at 7 and he takes them to daycare at 8. I get them at 4:30. I get my clothing and theirs ready the night before.

Breakfast is usually fruit, cereal, eggs, toast, avocado, cheese, yogurt, something like that.

  • I get as much stuff ready the night before as possible.

In the morning, I get up at 5:30 and get myself ready.  I finish getting the kids bags ready and then wake up DS around 6ish.  I get him dressed and load everything into the car (minus the kids).  Then I get DD up, changed and dressed and put her in the carseat.  I am usually out the door about 6:20.  DS eats breakfast at daycare and DD has her first bottle when we get there.

It's constant chaos in the morning.  DH is a police officer and works nights.  I am gone before he even gets home so I do all of the above by myself.  It's not easy but it can be done.

  • We don't really have one.  I get up first and shower.  Then I usually get DS2 dressed and bring him in the bathroom with me while I dry my hair.  In the meatime DH showers and gets DS2 ready.  Then we put coats on and get them to the car and we both leave for work.  They get breakfast at daycare.  Honestly it's not a huge deal in our house.  Today I got up at 6:55 and was out the door at 7:25.
  • It varies depending on the kids' schedules.  DD is very predictable -- up between 6:45-7.  DS is not so predictable and that's where the problems come up.  So I try to shower and do as much as possible to get ready the night before.  Then DS usually wakes between 5-6:30.  I set my alarm for 6 and get up and dress and get myself ready.  If DS wakes before me, I feed him and either get him back to sleep or just park him in his exersaucer while I get ready.  If he wakes at 6:30, he is usually fine without a bottle until we reach daycare so I only have to dress him and then we go and rouse DD and get her dressed.  While DS's schedule is in flux, I just kind of juggle things around as needed to make sure we are out the door by 7:30 am.  As he gets older and his schedule more predictable, it will make it easier for me to do more stuff in the morning again.

  • I get everything ready the night before:

Baths for both kids and me, lunches, and snacks, diaper bag, outfits for both kids and me.

All I have to do is get up, wash up, makeup and hair.  Dress kids, brush teeth, comb hair.  Then load the car and out the door we go.

I have found that getting them ready and giving them a morning snack gives me time to dress myself...and I am out the door within 30 to 45 mins.
