Almost burn house down---CHECK. :-(

I am sooooooooo stup!d!

I was trying to multi task and do wayy to much..while I was juggling a dirty laundry, folding dry clothes, washing dishes and putting baby to bed.. I added another task.

Sterilize freezer Medela freezer bottles and some baby bottles I had just rinsed.

So.....

I put my favorite pot on the stove.  Normally I boil water in a tea pot and pour on top of the bottles/nipples I have already in a big pot.

I don't know what I was thinking this time!

I got the big pot I usually use and fill it with water and turn the burner on.

I come downstairs and it still isn't boiling... (a watched pot never boils right??)

So to multitask--I add the bottles and everything in the pot.

I continue with my other household chores.  DH puts baby to bed. Check.  I go potty.  Check.  I fold laundry. Check.  Make bed.  Check.  Put DH in bed.   Check.  Check emails.  Check.  Finish sweeping. Check.... Ahh.. finally bed time!! YES!!! Check..

DH wakes up around 3am to a house full of fumes and a funny smell and wakes me up.. he turns on the light to see a thin mist of smoke looming over the ceiling.  (VERY thin and almost invisible)...

He bolts out of bed thinking its my brother that forgot to turn of the space heater in the living room and something caught on fire downstairs.  (My brother is spending the week with us while he is home from college--)  I walk to the bannister and realize something.....the smoky mist is coming from the kitchen..I FLEW down the stairs chanting.. "Sh!t Sh!t Sh!t"  and go to the kitchen....

I find my favorite $200 All-Clad Pot with a 1inch thick layer of plastic putty in the bottom just boiling like if it was wax.  The last nipple is half melted!

I turn it off...I am sick to my stomach to know that this was all my fault!

I had 20 Medela 2oz Freezer bottles and 4 avent 4 oz baby bottles in the pot...all melted away!!!

Pot..ruined.

Bottles..melted..

We immediately oopen all the doors and windows and turn on the intake fans to full bore... we put a space heater in our room and open a window in our sink area and bathroom area so the mist goes away from our room where our baby is at.

arggh...I feel terrible!  What if..what if... argghh!

My DH of course doesn't stop reminding me of the incident..he has sent me txt msgs all day about it....  I feel absolutely terrible.

Please please please....  only do what you can SAFELY.  Dirty bottles can wait... steriliziting can wait.... do it when you have time to sit there and be in the ktichen the entire time!

Ironically I have a steam sterilizer (the avent one) and I really don't love it..I rather put the bottles in the dishwasher and do the sanirise option.

Today during lunch I took a quick trip to BRU to get a few new bottles.  $40 in bottles and $200 in pots and pans..I have learned a valuable lesson!

  • Oh no, Vange!  I'm so sorry.  How scary.  I know we have all had moments like that- it's true we do all need to slow down more.  (big hugs) and I'm so sorry about your bottles and pot!  That sucks.

  • That's awful!!  We've definitely all had moments where we got too wrapped up in things and had close calls.  I've learned that whenever I do something time sensitive like that to set the timer as a reminder to at least check whatever I'm doing.  But why didn't your smoke alarms go off?  Maybe this is actually a lucky thing b/c it's a reminder to check the batteries on all of them?  An expensive price for sure but I'm SO GLAD you're all okay!!
  • So glad you & your family are OK!!  How scary!

You might want to check your smoke detectors.  If you were able to see a thin film of smoke at your ceiling, I would think that should have triggered the detectors.

  • I am glad to hear that the house didn't catch on fire..... or you guys got sick from toxic fumes....

  • That is super scary!  I agree, we all can do too much at one time!  I'm glad everything is ok.
  • Yikes!  I'm glad it wasn't worse damage.  Sometimes Mommy brain gets the best of us.
  • Oh sweetie!  I'm glad it wasn't anything more than it was.  Try not to beat yourself up...and tell the hubs that he needs to lay off.

    Hugs.

Nobody said life would be easy, they just promised it would be worth it.

  • 100% agree with others. Try not to beat yourself up... we all get caught up ... and sh*t just happens.

I had something like this happen when Maddy was 6 wks. The event shook me up pretty good and DH had a come to Jesus talk with me. I needed to slow down, think things through and stop taking on so much.

Big hugs! I'm sorry you ruined the pots and bottle, but at least everyone is safe.

Ditto. I'm glad it didn't cause worse damage and that everyone is safe and ok. I know my DH would never let me live that down.

  • Oh no! That must have been so scary. I'm glad everyone was ok. I agree that you should tell your DH to lay off. You learned your lesson, and even better, shared it with the rest of us!

  • Oh honey I know it's so hard but please just try to get your mind to move on. (And tell DH to eff off for god's sake.) I set our microwave on fire last year trying to cook a sweet potato and I put it on for too much time and went and did something else. We've all tried to do too much at one point. Hugs!!
  • Oh no, how scary.

Do you guys have smoke detectors?

  • I'm so glad that everyone is okay and that the only damage was a pot and some bottles. It's rough when we have to learn lessons the hard way. Tell your DH enough and that maybe this isn't just a sign that you need to slow down, but that you need some help!
