High-Risk Pregnancy

Amnio?

Have any of you guys have an amnio?  I might have one and wanted to know what to expect...

TIA!

Re: Amnio?

  • I had one done 12 years ago with my son.  I don't remember it hurting that much, but they did have trouble finding fluid because I was about 36 weeks along.  So I was poke several times.  I know that really isn't much help but I do remember thinking the worse and it was nothing.

  • I had one at 18 weeks--so about a month ago. The poke didn't hurt at all I didn't think, and the whole thing was more uncomfortable than painful. It wasn't pleasant, but I wouldn't say it was horrible either. We had to have one to rule out any chromosomal issues that could be contributing to what my baby girl has going on. Why are they suggesting you have one?

  • im carrying twins so i needed TWO amnios at once... im being honest with you i am the biggest baby ever...I cry at blood tests.. i read horror stories online and was soooo scared.. i was crying in the waiting room.. When i got it, i was freaked... it takes a while to set up so you get really scared. The needle did not hurt at all. i had a towel over my face so i couldnt see it but mu husband said its very very thin... the dr said "its in" and i was shocked. For a quick second i felt a cramp. Thats what happens when the needle gets in. then she said "ok all done with the first one."  I seriously couldnt believe it. The one thing i will say is that for about 2 days after i was crampy.
  • I have had one with each pregnancy, but to check for lung maturity so later in pregnancy.

Neither one bothered me at all.  To be honest I was more uncomfortable from having to lay on my back during the u/s while they did all the measurements and everything before the amnio.  The needles are super thin.  In fact one of them bent while going in because they are so thin. I personally like to think it is because I have rock-hard abs under all the fluff.

Good luck.  It really doesn't hurt at all.  Just rest after and you should be fine.

After I had my AFP I got a call from my OB stating that my DS risk went up to 1:182 and they recommend an amnio.  We are keeping the baby regardless so I figured I would have my Level II u/s and see where that takes us before considering the amnio.  If we do decide to have it (we would like to be prepared if the baby does have DS) I would prefer to have it later on in the pregnancy.

  • i just had one last week!  I completely had it overblown in my mind!!  It really wasn't bad at all (keep in mind they had to poke me twice!!!)  It feels like a tetnus shot...or a shot that you have had in your muscle!  there is a SMALL poke and then some cramping when they go through the muscle of the utreus wall...but nothing that you can't handle...I PROMISE!!!

They had to poke me twice becasue the first one the baby moved, and they had to pull the needle out quickly and got some of my blood in the sample...the second poke was really easier than the first!

After they finished they did a NST to make sure baby is okay and that you don't have any contractions!

The needle is THIN...it isn't terribly long either...it is small like a flu shot needle!  Trust me YOU WILL BE FINE! :)

    Hope this helps!

  • I had one yesterday to see if there are any chromosome issues to go along with Spina Bifida, which we know our son has - we needed to know for his care after birth if anything else was going to complicate.  I totally made it worse in my mind.  A little pinch with the needle, some cramping and it was over.  My husband got the worse end of the deal, he let me hold onto him and I was so scared through the whole thing that I squeezed with my nails and left bruises.  I took it easy yesterday, am back to work today and feel fine.  Now the hard part...waiting for the result.
  • First I want to thank you all for sharing your experiences with me, it truly has made me feel a lot better about the amnio

Second, I'm sending prayers to all who are awaiting results.  Please keep us all updated!

    Thanks again all!

    *HUGS*
