Dreft?

I'm going today to buy some detergent to wash a load of baby clothes in and I was wondering if anyone had any other recommendations besides Dreft or is Dreft the best? Also is there a fabric softener I can use since some clothes for LO feel a bit scratchy?

Thanks all!

Re: Dreft?

  • I think you can use any of the "free" detergents.  I think All Free and Clear and others like that.  I like the smell of Dreft and used the Target version (MUCH cheaper)!  And for the dryer sheets, I just used the fragrance free ones.  DD never had an issue, and I plan to do the same for this one's stuff!  Good luck!

  • I use Tide White on everything we wash in the house since dd was born.  I wouldn't use a fabric softener.  I would get some dryer balls or something along those lines.  If you do want to use a fabric softener, just make sure it's unscented.
  • There are tons of dye/fragrance free options out there.  I don't think there's anything special about Dreft except the price.

However, I have heard that using fabric softener on LO's clothes makes them less fire retardant.  Just an FYI.

  • Any free and clear will work.  I bought one bottle of Dreft and will switch to a free and clear once it's gone.  I used a free and clear dryer sheet only on the towels but everything else just laundry detergent.  For sleepers that are flame retardant you aren't supposed to use any fabric softener.
  • All Dreft is good for is a baby scent. I use All Free & Clear for my laundry since I have sensitive skin, and I'm using the same for baby clothes, using a little bit less so there's less residue. I've heard that perfume- and dye-free detergent is pretty much the best option. I never use fabric softener so I don't know about that.
  • I use All free and clear. It is cheaper then Dreft and available at any store (dreft is not always available in supermarkets)

  • I had Dreft to begin with but I have switched to Tide Free.  Dreft has a lot of scent/perfume to it that I did not like.  I use Bounce Free and Clear dryer sheets, they are free of dyes and perfumes.

I have heard the same.  My Mom also told me that the Dreft is great at getting the stains out.  Way better than a regular detergent.

  • I would never buy Dreft because of all the chemicals and perfumes in it.  Gross.  If you want to stick with a mainstream brand then buy a free and clear detergent.  We use 1/4 C white vinegar in the fabric softener dispenser and wool dryer balls in the dryer.

  • We already use hypo-allergenic detergent or "free" detergents because some of the people living here have sensitive skin. But I'd say whatever you use on LO's clothes you should use on your own too because LO will be coming in contact with your clothes just as much as he will his own.
  • Dryer sheets are supposed to negate the flame-retardant of LO's clothes. For fabric softener, I've been using white vinegar and I LOVE it! It doesn't end up smelling the way you think it will - it's actually a fresh, clean smell. For static, I've been trying out tennis balls in the dryer, but I don't know how much I love them. There are other dryer balls you could probably get at Target - take a look while you're there.

  • I haven't bought any dreft(have a few sample packs) but I did buy Purex free and clear and really like that. I bought a bottle of dreft stain spray and will use that for stains but I dont see the point of buying the dreft detergent because it is so expensive compared to other detergents. If you have to try a few different brands out and see what you like but I think any of the free and clear will do the job!!

  • Thanks everyone. I don't have anything that is flame retardant so I'm sure I am ok as far as dryer sheets go. I'm going to probably spend an hour in the walmart detergent aisle scratching my head ha ha. I'll take photos I promise!

I find this very interesting about the white vinegar. How much do you use and you just put it in the detergent compartment?

  • dont wast the $$ on Dreft--get All Free and Clear;  just a word on fabric softeners....they mess up the flame retardant stuff on clothes.

  • I'm using Dreft, but never EVER buy it without at least a $5 coupon. I'm considering getting a dryer ball.  But, to be perfectly honest, I would use Dreft dryer sheets if they made it, because I really like the smell.

  • For those that asked about using vinegar as fabric softener, use 1/4-1/3 cup in the dispenser cup.  It works great and doesn't leave a smell behind.  And to OP if you have sleepers for the baby they are flame retardant.  You really don't want to use fabric softener on them.  And Dreft is just overpriced perfumed up detergent.  You can get regular F&C detergent that works well and doesn't cost even half of what Dreft does.  We use F&C detergent with our stuff or home made detergent scented with essential oils that don't irritate DS skin because he has finicky skin depending on time of year.  And he rarely has issue with either.  When we use the synthetically fragranced detergents is when his skin really acts up.
