Leftover Follistim and Lupron

Tonight may be my last night of stims (today is my 10th day).

my protocol has been 300IU of Follistim - I have the 900IU cartriges, so 3 doses per cartridge. I will need to open a new cratridge for my dose tonight, but then I will have 2/3 of it left over. Can I save it for a future cycle if need be?

eta: same for Lupron - I won't be using the whole vial. Can I save it?

Re: Leftover Follistim and Lupron

  • You can save the Follistim- refrigerated until expiration date on the box.

The Lupron expires 30 days after opening.

  • I believe that opened follistim is only good for 30 days, so it wouldn't make it to future cycles, kwim?

not sure about the lupron though, I didn't have any left over.

so even though the Follistim cartridge has been pierced for 1 dose, I can still save it to it's exp date?
  • My RE said it was fine to use my opened Follistim cartridge a few months later for my next cycle.  The Lupron is only good for 30 days like pp said.
  • If follistim is like gonalF then it's only good for short period of time once it has been opened.  gonalF is 28 days after opening.

    un-opened until expiration date

Store refrigerated, 2?8?C (36?46?F) until dispensed. Upon dispensing, the product may be stored by the patient at 2?8?C (36?46?F) until the expiration date, or at 25?C (77?F) for 3 months or until expiration date, whichever occurs first. Once the rubber inlay of the Follistim? AQ Cartridge has been pierced by a needle, the product can only be stored for a maximum of 28 days at 2?25?C (36?77?F).

  • Anything that is open is "technically" only good for about a month.  I say "technically" because the meds are usually fine after that the companies are just worried about liability so they're UBER conservative.

  • I would ask your RE what they think about it...mine said it was ok to use it a few months later and it worked just the same for my next cycle.  I know it sucks to throw out that much money in meds, so if your dr is ok with it, then i'd save it, just in case.

I am going to ask him tomorrow. I can't even imagine what a 900IU Follisim cartridge costs! and to throw it out 1/3 used seems criminal. I would at least like to donate it.

This. If I need to do a 10th day of stims, I am using 150iu's from a cartridge leftover from October.  My RE said it is fine as long as it has stayed refrigerated.  If i don't need it for this cycle, he advised to dispose of it (as my next cycle won't be until April and he felt that was too long).
