Baby Showers

Diaper Cake?

Hello. I am planning a baby shower for my MOH and I came across how to make a diaper cake and it looked really easy and as long as you cover the diapers with tissue paper, the diapers will still be usable. long story short... I was wondering if anyone made one of these for a shower and what were the thoughts on it. TIA

  • I made one for my SIL last year.  Pretty easy... the most time consuming part was rolling all the diapers.  You can dress it up with ribbons, blankets, and other baby things.  I love them.

Do you remember about how many diapers you used?

  • They are too cute! My cousin made me one at my shower. Here is something I found online that may help you.

? 60 diapers (depends on how big you make it) You can use either disposable or cloth - better find out what the expectant mother would like. You can use either white or patterned diapers.

? Ribbon, 1/2 or 1 inch wide, patterned to fit the baby shower theme. Pink, blue, or yellow are good choices.

? Ribbon, 1/4 inch to tie rolled diapers with

? 36-60 small rubber bands (depending on how you want to "build" the cake

    ? 6 large rubber bands

? One 8-oz baby bottle or one large bottle of baby lotion

    ? One 4-oz baby bottle

? A cardboard or plastic cake platter

? Cake decorations - for example, baby confetti, baby sock roses, artificial roses, etc.

? Baby items - Pacifiers, bottles, lotion, bibs, receiving blankets, miniature stuffed animals, baby towel, onesie, wash cloths, baby hygiene products, toys, etc.
  • My friend used a video on youtube to make one and it turned out so cute!
  • My aunt made one for my shower and it was a total hit.. and the diapers are now stacked in a nice little bin awaiting my baby's arrival to use them lol.

What she did was took a bottle of wine [so we can drink it and celebrate when the baby comes] and sat it on circle dinner plate. She then rolled diapers up and secured each with a rubber band [about 65 diapers] Then she set the diaper up along the base of the bottle of wine and put a rubber band around them. She then went in with pink ribbon [having a girl] and covered up the rubber band then glued little pacifiers and things to the ribbon and she worked her way to the top. At the top she put one of those security blankets with pooh on it as like a cake topper.

  • My mom just made a bassinet one for mine and it is adorable. She made stacked ones too and they are going to be the centerpieces on the tables.
  • Thanks for the advice ladies!

I have another question, at the shower did the expectant mother open the diaper cake in front of everyone (we are planning to cver each layer with tissue paper, to keep the diapers safe) or do you just set it up and everyone can look at it? And then open it after everyone leaves?

I guess I'm a little concerned that no one will know what it is b/c of the tissue paper.... did anyone have one that didnt have tissue paper? I read somewhere that you shouldnt have any opened diapers until the baby comes or you cant use them. I'm so clueless when it comes to babies lol!

    TIA!!

  • I have made 3 or 4 diaper cakes for friends/family and I have never used tissue paper. I just use diapers and I glue any of the accessories to the ribbon I put around the middle of each layer OR I will use floral wire and wire pacifiers or hide a wire around a bottle or something and then stick the wire down the center of the rolled wire. It doesn't damage the diapers in any way and everything is still 100% fine to be used for the baby.

Personal opinion, but I think if you use tissue paper it will take away from it being a 'diaper' cake.

  • Didn't read your last entry but I take clear shrink wrap (dollar tree) and place it in, and shrink it with a hairdryer and tie w/ a ribbon.  then i attach a poem with all the things i put in the cake so there's no need to open it till they get home.  but cause it has clear wrap on they can see everything and it keeps every in side.  hope that answered the ?'s GL
