High-Risk Pregnancy

Down Syndrome test result 1/236

Hi Mommies,

My Doctor called me today to tell me my results showed a 0.4 percent chance of my baby having Down Syndrome. I ask your adivce is it worth to even get the Amniocentesis test done? The risk for miscarrige is high. I'm very worried and Sad that this could happen. What should i do?

Thank you

  • It is definitely a personal decision about getting an amnio.  I know women who have decided to have one because they would terminate; women who got one because they wanted to be prepared; and women who chose not to because they planned to carry the pregnancy to term no matter what.

I think the risk for miscarriage from amnio is lower than your risk of Downs, but like I said, it is a very very personal decision.  Good luck with whatever you decide, I hope you find all is fine.

  • I agree with PP that it is a very personal decision.  Would the result have an effect on your decision to carry on with the pregnancy?  If you would plan to continue the pregrancy regardless of the results then you could just wait unitl your 20 week level II u/s.

I know it is scary.  Good luck.

  • My chances are higher than that due to my age. My DH and I decided since we wouldn't terminate, we didn't want to risk the loss of the pg. We figured the 20 week u/s would likely pick up some DS traits if they were there.

The rate of m/c after amnio varies but the research I found says its 0.5%-0.8% - so, the chance of losing the pg is twice as likely as having a child with DS. Of course, you and your DH have to discuss what is best for you. I would ask more questions and do more research if you're unsure of the risks and benefits. The numbers are scary, but keep in mind your chance of having a child without DS is 99.6%!

  • Hi,

Just wanted to tell you our story--we were given a 1 in 15 chance of our baby girl having Down Syndrome. We opted not to do the amnio as we would not terminate anyway. At our 18 week ultrasound, they ended up doing an amnio anyway because of some other issues Avery has going on--results came back and she has the karyotype of a healthy baby girl. Hope that helps!

  • my risk for my twins was 1/42... i did an amnio and am all for it... I needed to know for peace of mind... i didnt wanna spend 9 months worrying.. Also the risk of misscariage is not high, you just have to trust your dr. and follow rules after, like 24 hours of bedrest.  good luck- also my friends chance was 1/6 and her baby was 100% fine...
  • I am not pregnant right now but when I was pregnant with DS my result came in as 1/191. I was offered the amnio but refused because of the 1-2% rate of m/c ( my 1st preg ended in m/c). Ds was born with no problems. While it was hard to wait the 20 or so weeks to find out at the birth if he had downs.. I am glad that I did cause I would not have been able to live with myself if i did the amnio and had a m/c as he was 100% healthy. That said I wont be doing that test when we get pregnant again. The fale positive is way too high. Good luck in your decision.
