Hi Ladies- I am 29 weeks this week with twins and the babies are trying to come out. My dr still thinks I can last a few more weeks... Im worried about pre mature birth. Whats the earliest you guys have delivered and did youexperience any problems? im scared. thanks!!
Re: when did you deliver (if early)
I had my first DD at 27 weeks. She spent 66 days in the NICU with the normal NICU ups and downs. We had a few scares but overall she did very well. She is very healthy today although she does get PT and Speech for a gross motor and language delay (which her therapists are sure she'll overcome).
Feel free to come on over to the preemie board. There is a lot of experience over there and people are very supportive.
The good news is you're past 28 weeks which is a huge milestone and almost to 30 weeks which is another huge milestone. Each day you keep those babies inside is 2-3 days less in the NICU!
I am a former high risker, who had a hemorrhaging episode at 29 weeks. I had a risk of delivery, and while in the hospital, got a visit from the NICU docs...
This is what I was told...my hospital's policy is that all premies stay in the NICU until 35 weeks gestational age before they are allowed to go home. She also said that outcomes for premies at 29weeks are very good. At the time, my baby was estimated to be a 3lb 4oz, which also was a good sign.
Also, I work in early intervention and as a physical therapist, most of my caseload are premies. Most of the 29 weekers or later premies do receive some sort of early intervention service due to developmental delays, but very few of the ones I have worked with go on to need services beyond age three. They may be a little behind kids of the same age, but very often are on target if you adjust for their prematurity
If your babies are born now or anytime before 35 weeks, I would expect a NICU stay and I would ask your OB to meet with those doctors so you have an idea of what to expect. I personally have no experience with the NICU, but many moms do and you may ask this question on the premie board too. Have they estimated your babies' weight? The higher the weight, the better. You can really scare yourself with all of the information out there. I would familiarize yourself with your local early intervention program too, they can be of tremendous support when you have babies that are born early or have some other need that would qualify for services.
Good luck, and try not to worry, that won't do you or your LOs any good. Keep those beautiful babies cooking as long as possible. Best wishes, T&Ps to you!
I had PIH and was induced at 36w4d. My DD arrived at 36w6d. Has your doctor mentioned anything about steriod shots? I recevied them at 33weeks when by BP skyrocketed. I also had a amnio at 36w2d to see if DD lungs were mature.
Good luck. I'm hoping you can hang on a few more weeks.
My water broke at 34 weeks, I started labor naturally from that point on and DD was born less than 9 hours later. Weighing 4 lbs 5 oz, she spent 15 days in the NICU and only had feeding issues. She has always been little and is still only 21 lbs and at the 8th percentile. My Ped wants us to get her to gain weight. She had PT for torticolis around 6 months as she was getting a flat spot due to a preference to one side due to the tight neck muscles. That has been our only delay if you want to call it that. She is perfect in every way...just little. Good luck and try to hold out as long as you can.
I've been on hospital bedrest for PTL since 28w6d. Are you on bedrest? What is your OB/peri doing at this point?
i had DS at 29 weeks. 6 1/2 weeks in NICU. ups and downs but we made it through! you would NEVER know he was a preemie after he came home. within a few weeks he completely surpassed the growth chart and has continued that during the past 3 years!
good luck to you and your twins. i am also carrying twins and i hope that i can make it to our goal of 35 weeks. so far, so good. Peri appt yesterday babies are HUGE and cervix is nice and long! all we can do is pray.
God Bless!
