Child proofing lever door handles

Anyone have any tips?  DS just reached up at my parents house and opened the door like it was the easiest thing ever.  Luckily the lever handles in my house are a tad bit higher, so I have a very small window to install before he starts opening doors at the house.  All the ones I am finding require adhesive or screws to install.  Are there any other options?

  • You'll need either a higher up dead bolt or one of those chain attachments like in hotels.

I do think BRU sells some sort of child proofing contraption for lever doors though. Check it out.

  • Are you talking like French door handles? I know I have seen at Target some baby proofing specifically for the french handles. If that doesn't work my dad just got an eyelet screw and a hook and screwed it into the top of the door so DD couldn't open it.

  • The only ones I found are adhesive or screw mounted.  We used the adhesive kind and they work really well.  We had to remove one to replace it and it peeled off really easily, so I'm not too concerned about damaging our doors.

Thanks!  That was my main concern.

  • Our basement door has low lever handles. We put a hook and eye at the top to keep him from opening the basement door.

If you don't want to screw something in, you could always use like the sticky things that go on cabinets...I tried to find the ones we have online, but no luck.

  • I have this on the door to my basement, and we used the safety first adhesive kind... works great!

  • We just installed a bunch of these.  They work without adhesive - but you do have to remove the handle to install this.  The handle goes back on, but this works with the lever system. Also - we had to install them upside down. DS pulls down hard and I was afraid the thing you slide over would break off.

  • We have the one Rubygirl just posted, and DS can open the doors anyway. They don't work very well. I saw some on the One Step Ahead website that says they don't require screws or adhesive, so we may try those. We have all lever doors in this place.

Scary story of how we learned DS could open the lever door handles himself: We were in a hotel in Boston w/adjoining rooms w/MIL. We were all in MIL's room and Oliver was running back and forth between them. Suddenly it was quiet, so DH went in the other room to chase him, and he was gone. He had opened the hotel room door and was standing in the hallway! Of course he couldn't get back in because you needed a key card. Luckily he'd only been gone a few seconds so he was right there. Scared the crap out of me!!
