How long from letting you know to peeing on the potty?

Last night M was running around naked and started to show signs that she had to pee. She always touches her hamburger when she has to pee. SO at least she's aware of it. So I brought her to the potty, but she refused to pee on it. She kept getting off. I have been putting her on it for a couple of weeks to get her used to it. Anyway, she refused. Then she ran back out into the living room & peed on the floor. Then came to tell me about it. LOL So how long until they realize that going on the potty is the thing to do? Any tips for encouraging it? I know to make a huge party once she actually does go on it, but.... how do i get her to go on it?  TIA

  • The 1st day is hard.  She will probably pee on the floor several times.  Just make sure that once you see her going, or right after she does, you put her on the potty.  That way she gets the idea. Eventually (that day, or the next) she might start to go in her pants then hold it and finish on the potty.  The 3rd day she will be more aware of the feeling and let you know.  This is how it was for us, anyway.  Just keep her in panties while she is awake.  Diapers will only confuse her.  And yes, lots of praise when she does go! GL! : )

  • I'm certainly no expert since we've only just started the PTing process, but accidents are common in the beginning. What worked for me to get DD to pee on the potty for the first time was sitting down next to her and reading books until she went, all while promising her a treat if she peed or pooped on the potty. I think it took about 30 minutes of sitting there -- during which time I had to remind her to stay seated -- before she went the first time.

We also got three potty books -- The Potty Book for Girls, A Potty for Me!, and Dora's Potty Book (DD's favorite) -- which I think helped explain the process to her a bit.
