NOT GETTING THE H1N1 Vaccine

I know this may sound crazy to some people but I truly don't feel comfortable getting the H1N1 Vaccine. My doctor told me to go ahead and get it, but I feel like this virus came about suddenly and that the government has something up their sleeves. It seems like they came up with the vaccine super fast (which is not normal) was the vaccine already made up before people were infected? How many clinical trials have been done on the vaccine to ensure its safety and effectiveness?

I know I sound like a conspiracy theorist but I just don't trust it.

What do you guys think? How many are getting it and how many are still undecided?

Re: NOT GETTING THE H1N1 Vaccine

  • I had the swine flu already (as did both of my daughters), and I know I can catch it again, but it wasn't any worse than the seasonal flu so I will be skipping the vaccine -- just like I skip getting the seasonal flu vaccine every year.

No special reason behind my choice.

  • Not getting it for me or for DS. We got the seasonal and although I know they're different vaccines I'm not getting it. I'm more concerned about the unknown side effects than getting the flu.

  • I'm pretty much in the same boat. Although, DS just turned 6 months so he wasn't eligible until now. I'm just too nervous about it.
  • It was done quickly because it is a strain of the normal flu. It's not like it was a vaccine created from scratch.

It's a personal decision for everyone, but with the amount of traveling I do, I got it. There was no way I was sitting on a plane for 12 hours back and forth to Hawaii next week and exposing myself and my unborn child to who knows what.

I also get the regular flu vaccine every year and haven't gotten sick since I started that.

  • I also got it! i have direct pt contact b/c i work in a hospital..i had pt's last year come in my department w/swine flu and i wasn't chancing my babies life with something i could prevent ...if it was just me i might not have gotten it but my OB basically said i didn't have a choice b/c i was considered high risk
  • I got both seasonal and h1n1 but only until after dr said she was behind it (she wasnt initially) not to mention two co-workers had college kids home from school with H1N1

  • Personally I chose not to get it.  It agree that I felt the vaccine was a bit rushed.  I understand that need to get a vaccine on the market fast, but I didn't want to be the first generation of pregnant women delivering babies after getting the H1N1.

It could be inceredibly safe, but like with any new drug/vaccine, etc. only time will tell.  I figure that my probability of getting H1N1 and suffering dearly is a fairly low risk and I wa willing to take it in proportion to the unknown.

I fell confident and happy with my decision, but it's really a personal choice.

  • Interesting topic... I was very nervous about the decision.  My OB was bullying me to get it, but my primary dr. said heck NO.  After hearing both sides, I had to decide not to.  The fact is, there is NO research as to what it can do to your unborn baby.  It's a gamble either way.  I did alot of online research.  Women who are pregnant who are infected with swine flu, only 25% of them had complications.  I chose to take those odds rather than seeing adverse affects in my baby months to come.
