Do/did you have to limit time spent napping for dc?

I think I'm going to have to start limiting the time P is sleeping for his naps. He usually takes a 3 hour nap, but lately with a 3 hour nap, it is taking him at least an hour to fall asleep at his normal bedtime of 8:30. This means, he isn't really asleep until 9:30 or even 10:00. That is way to late with a 7:00am wake up time (especially on school mornings). He needs his sleep. I think I may have to limit his naptime to no more than 2 hours. I hate to wake him from a nap, but I don't know of anything else I could do.

He still needs a nap, so no nap, would be out of the question.

Have you had to do this with your dc? Did it work?

  • My DD started giving up her nap at 2, she is 3.5 now.  If she does fall asleep, I never let her sleep after 4, or she will be up all night.  How many hours is he sleeping in total?  DD sleeps 12 hours, which I think is average.

    He sleeps 10.5 at night (8:30pm - 7:00am) and takes a 3 hour nap.

On another note: he just started going potty on his own (after he goes to bed is the most opportune time for him, even if he has gone right before going to bed....lol). So this alone, may be keeping him up, since he thinks (and so do I) that it's a big deal and is very proud of himself for doing so.

  • I wake DS up no later than 4:15pm, cause otherwise he will not be tired for naptime.  I don't have to do it very often, thank goodness.  I try to avoid it by putting DS down for a nap a little earlier so that he is able to wake up on his own.
  • I typically make sure he's awake by 4 (with a bedtime of 8).  He starts his nap by 1 and occasionally I do have to wake him up, but otherwise, he's not really ready for bed at 8.  I do just let him sleep if he started his nap late or we had a really busy morning.

  • He goes down at 12:30 for his nap and I don't let him sleep past 3:30, but even with 5 hours before bed, sometimes he just won't go to sleep right away.

  • That would not work for DS. He's a disaster if he's woken.  But he also stopped napping at age 2.  It just was too disruptive to his nighttime sleep.
